Oh good night - your friend is my new hero! I have done that trip pregnant and traveling with a 3 yr old - but my husband was along for the ride as well. I literally get nauseas at the thought of ever ever doing it alone!!

Oh good heavens! We are SOUL SISTERS!!

I can NOT believe that kind of nagmerrie rit you had! (nightmare ride). Wow, just wow. And profound and humble sympathies from one cross-continental trekker to another.

I have only done the trip alone with one kid - THREE defies the imagination! Literally, defies the imagination!

Lol, I can relate! I am your bosom buddy~
Just linked to you thru the Run a Muck. I'm american living in Worcester, SA 7 yrs now. I've done the trip several times-- ugh! I have other funny travel stories (like when we went from TX to West Africa for 6 wks w/my 18 mth old and I was 7 mths preggie w/my 2nd.) But the trip from SA to US by myself w/ 3 kids in '05 was the craziest nightmare trip of all. Had the waking of kids at 2am etc..., AND my 5 y.o. son locked himself in the bathroom (took us almost 30min to get him out) during our 12hr layover in Heathrow, flights were delayed and connections missed, luggage lost, also left PURSE on the plane when we arrived late in america without passports!, left kids with strangers to run back thru security while they were yelling at me to stop- (yikes) to go retrieve purse. While trying to reschedule connections my kids were crying tired & hungry, then we ran for a flight and never ate, can you say low-blood-sugar-meltdown? I developed the worst migraine by the end of it all and lost my cookies a few times. All I could think was, "We're in america now and it will be better tomorrow."
The trip back to SA is another story...
Loved your story. I feel your pain! :)

Wow. Just, wow. I have nothing to add, no travel tips and, now, a lot more appreciation for my 24 week pregnant friend who just got back in the states from China with her 2 and 1 year olds. WOW. I will never complain about the 13 hour car trip to see family again listening to the Gaithers over and over and over... (unfortunately one of the things he inherited other than his looks from his father is a love of cheesy gospel.)
and also, I will NOT plan an international flight with my family... ever. :)

[...] In the blink of an eye I went from zoned out can-sleep-anywhere-anytime traveler to a mama who felt every bump and lurch of the plane from her kids’ perspective and wondered how the heck she would navigate the track lighting to the nearest exit hauling a child if anything went wrong. Suddenly safety mattered. (Well, safety and being sure not to run out of chocolate milk or a change of clothes at 30,000 feet.) [...]
