Slam (brother) Poetry

September 25, 2009

Brothers;
Their love comes from where the wild things are.
Crashing and bashing its way out of the woods
towards curl-tugging, nose-grabbing,
chasing, embracing,
growling kisses.

Dancing the bedtime blues
they sway and pray
for more time
free of the confines of 4 posters and a set of sheets.
When granted a reprieve
it’s wrenchingly beautiful
to see them pause between bouts of bedlam
and hug the guts [...]

Don't hate me because my mother-in-law rocks!

September 24, 2009

Laying to rest the ghosts of all bad mothers-in-law, mine is one part knight-in-shining-armor, one part Betty Croker, and one part Mary Poppins. She makes housework fun and spoons sugar into all her interactions with us. Short, joyous, and faithful she arrives at the airport this afternoon and I, for one, couldn’t be more excited [...]

If hell was a mouse his name would be Chuck-E-Cheese

September 19, 2009

I (almost) have no words to describe the pure insanity of the last couple hours’ excursion to the home of the mouse-who-shall-not-be-named (and who really looks a lot more like an oversize, growth-hormone, induced rat anyway). Talk about heading into the heart of darkness if the heart of darkness was the inside of a hunk [...]

Some days are just happy days

September 18, 2009

Some days are hot tea, warm belly, happy heart days. Even when they are difficult. Even when your husband is away for a week and you are juggling work, two boisterous boys, commuting, cleaning, laundry and well, life. Some days start out in the pre-dawn dark with sippy cups and snuggles between warm bodies still [...]

Sex and Faith: the universal human longings

September 17, 2009

I’ve been thinking about love. And sex. And faith. I’ve been listening to interesting, thoughtful, compelling, compassionate and artistic women as they strip down and bare their beliefs. Wrapped in blankets and propped between pillows, when the night light is flickering and the radio winding down, I have sat and read their words and let [...]

This is what a mercurial-tempered-toddler-on-the-verge-of-turning-two-time-bomb looks like.

Cute, eh?

Meet the contents of my car (be afraid, be very afraid)

September 9, 2009

While commuting into downtown DC this afternoon, admiring the view of the monuments from my gridlocked vantage point, and trying to tune out the piercingly annoying voice of Elmo rattling on about pets to my kids in the backseat, part of my brain registers that there is something a little off with my car. It [...]

The post where I make like a preschooler and ask, "But Whhhyyy?"

September 9, 2009

Why do fire engines wait till nap time to come chasing down our street?
Why isn’t it until I hear the garbage truck that I remember I should have put the trash out?
Why do the words “poop,” “fart,” and “burp” cause my boys to go into manic fits of laughter?
Why are the mechanisms of the flush [...]

Summer Lovin' Remix

September 7, 2009

Summer Lovin’, had us a blast

Summer Lovin’, Labor Day happen’d too fast

I’ve got a boy, crazy for dirt

Got another, who likes water spurts

Summer days driftin’ away,

to uh-oh those summer nights

Well-a well-a well-a

huh?!

Seventeen Years

September 2, 2009

Hey Mom,
Has it really been 17 years? You won’t believe all the things that have happened the last decade and a half. Dad’s the biggest change. I was talking to him today and he and Wanda have taken in another baby. A little girl this time.  She’s only 1 month older than my Micah; but [...]
