Ten things I learned from being snowbound for nearly ten days

February 15, 2010

So, you’ve seen it on the news, you’ve read about it online, you’ve followed the tweets. Now, here’s our insider’s perspective on what six straight days stuck inside due to back-to-back blizzards looks like and what we learned.

1. Table tents are an awesome way to spend a day

2. In a pinch, underpants can be re-purposed to make super hero masks

3. Shaving cream is simply snow in a can

4. A two-year-old boy can be smitten with the princess pink pull-ups his dad grabbed when stocking up between blizzards.

5. Art supplies are essential.

6. Body art is optional.

7. Drums sound louder with each passing day you are stuck inside

8. Even the toys will need to be washed by the end of it all.

9. You might lose your mind and the remote in the unlikeliest of places

10. A period of forced family hibernation is sweeter, messier, and more enjoyable than a cup of hot chocolate.

Thanks so very much to all of you who responded to our S.O.S. and shared your brilliant tips for keeping the troops entertained. We salute you and thank you and thought of you every time we tried out a new technique.

It was a blast!

Yes! The remote in the fridge and the underwear faces are my favorites. (I’m so glad we’re not the only ones who wear undies on our faces.)

As long as you’re stocked up, there’s something reeeeally nice about getting snowed in.

Awesome post.

This was just way too cute. The boys with the underoos on their heads just cracked me up! Glad ya’ll have survived. Pink pull ups and all. :)

Holy smokes, are your kids stinkin’ cute or what??

Glad our family isn’t the only one who finds the remote control in the craziest places (blizzard or no blizzard)!

Super cute, super fun post!
Sending some sunshine your way…

Way to be resourceful!

Glad you have the spunk to make the best of a situation and laugh about it.

Love all the pics to go with the points. I missed the pic of the pink pull ups though. Maybe it’s best that one didn’t get published:)

Ha! He was so delighted with them I couldn’t slow him down long enough for a pic – he just kept dancing and prancing up a storm in those pull ups!

I just subscribed and if I get to go to Relevant which I’m hoping I do, I would love to meet you!

Wow. Unders DO make great super hero masks. Very… Spidey looking.

I lost my remote too (no snowstorm needed. mind too, now that I think about it) in the laundry basket. Under the laundry. Guess that should be more incentive for me to actually put it away, huh? lol

It was all the 4-yr-old’s idea! He even instructed me on where to tape them so that their eyes would have enough room!

Repurposed underwear had me laughing out loud. I linked up this week, but we were only snowed in for one day.

I know, I tried not to make fun of you in your comments ;) I’ve lived in Michigan and in Ukraine and this is the most snow I have EVAH seen!! When you’re busting out the underoos as an accessory you know it’s been a loong time indoors!

Great pictures. I am actually kind of jealous. You’d think living where we do that we’d have days like that. But it hasn’t gotten so bad that we couldn’t leave the house if we had to (plus my husband has a 4 wheel drive truck). Glad you made the most of your blizzard days!

What kind of world is it where DC gets more snow than Michigan – Craziness!! My aunt in MI called to sympathize with us – but I think deep down she was just jealous! :)

LOVE the superhero masks! Just a heads up to make sure they are clean! And the shaving cream is a great idea too. Our grandson thinks he can’t take a bath without a can of shaving cream to play with.

SNORT! Yes, indeed, we did make sure they chose a fresh pair each! Goodness knows there were enough piles of laundry lying around after all that time trapped indoors!

Oh my gosh! How fun!! Love it all … great pics and what a sweet truth about “forced family hibernation.” We had the best time over Christmas when we spent four of our ten days traveling in the car. It was so fun to laugh and talk in an unhurried manner.

I know, right? But he was like greased lightning in those things – full of the happy dance of pull up joy – and I couldn’t get him to be still long enough to snap a decent pic. Also, his dad may or may not have liked the thought of his son modeling princess pull ups for all the world to see :)

I think you did the snow bound thing with much more grace than I! I’m ready to pull out my hair!! The walls are closing in! :) No, really, I loved being with my 5 kids …but, must admit, it’s time to get out!!

Reply

22 thegypsymama February 16, 2010 at 09:47

FIVE is a LOT more than just TWO kids! I bet those walls have you pinned almost as flat as a pancake – hang in there – I hope the end is in sight!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I thought I might lose my mind today. Instead, I think I will go steal some of daddy’s shaving cream!

Ha! Enjoy – it kept ours occupied for nearly 45 minutes and had the whole house smelling aqua fresh!

I’m cracking up! Those fabulous undie masks, I would’ve never imagined it. I’m just wondering who thought of that one. And the remote in the fridge, hilarous! It’s a good thing I wasn’t swallowing my drink when I started your post, otherwise, I would’ve sprayed my computer. Not good. :) Thanks for the laughs.

What is it with boys and underwear worn everywhere but where they should be?

Looks like you had the wherewithal to weather the storm, so to speak.

Thanks for the shaving cream idea…perhaps I’ll get on that one today.

I can’t imagine being stuck inside for that long. Good for you for being so creative with it!

Love the shaving cream idea!! gotta try that one. I’m not too far from you and well we got the same load of snow!! ugh. We are far enough from civilization that we are the only ones on the road that don’t have our own front end loader!! thankfully the neighbors have been very sweet in digging us out each time, it was waist deep on our long driveway.

Woman… you bring your own joy wherever you go — snowbound or no. Joy and laughter and hoot and a holler and a sweet, real Jesus wisdom and I deeply appreciate you.

Deeply… like snow deep :)

All’s grace,
Ann

Snow deep, eh?

We got drifts over 15 feet here, Ann.

Art supplies… definitely essential. I learned that the hard way. Yep.

39 thegypsymama February 17, 2010 at 23:31

Seriously?? The ART SUPPLIES are your one takeaway from this post. And this from the queen of the underpants stories?? Disappointed I am TM. I was sure those underoos would be like catnip to you. Need I remind you of a certain airline incident or a certain laundry incident, eh?? (Can’t believe she didn’t take the bait!)

I love this post as I stare outside at all of our many feet of snow. I am hoping our blizzards will be done for the winter, but now I have some ideas for when the next one blows through. :-)

by the way, I have no children and certainly wasn’t snowed in in Dallas, TX, but still managed to put the remote in the fridge a couple years back!
