If you give a mouse a cookie

July 12, 2010

If you give a kid a bucket, he will want to fill it with dirt.

If you give a kid some dirt, he’ll want to mix it with water.

If you give a kid some water, he will pour it all over himself.

If you give a kid some paper towels to wipe up the spills, he will unroll the whole bunch, shred them into teeny tiny bits, and try and flush them down the toilet.

If you give a kid a toilet plunger he will immediately use it to start sword fighting his brother.

If you give a kid a handful of sanitizer he will rub it into his hair and create a self styled Mohawk.

If you give a kid a hairbrush he will bust into off key karaoke while gyrating wildly around the house.

If you give a kid a set of loud tunes to jam to, he will want to drum along with the beat.

If you give a kid a set of drum sticks he will wail on every pot and pan in the house.

If you give a kid a pot or pan he will lug them up to the sand box and use them to “cook” with until they are completely scoured of all nonstick properties.

If you give a kid a hose pipe to rinse off the pots and pans he will demand a bucket.

Theoretically speaking, of course.

Love, Love, LOVE it!!! I can soooo relate! I can’t remember if I’ve commented before, but I’ve started following your blog – found you through Amy Tuttle’s Peruvian home. I so enjoy your sharing. :) Blessings!

Ain’t that the truth. And it’s really only when I remember that I can laugh through the chaos and think – dang, but my boys play hard and fun and fast. And mama makes it possible. Makes me feel happy down to my little toes.

Ha! Love this post! I wrote a similar one last year… only titled… “If You Give a Mouse a Tampon…” (I was the one who flubbed up though… not the kids for once!)

I love the joy I read in this post. In between the hand sanitizered formed mohawks, and paper towel clogged toilets. It beats itself out on pots and pans turned into drums.

Oh yes – yes, so true. So much loud, boy, clanging and jumping and jiving joy! Thank you for reading me between the lines. You put the loud poetry of parenting into words – I love that!

“If you give a kid a toilet plunger he will immediately use it to start sword fighting his brother.” Hehe! I don’t even have to give Baby J the toilet plunger, he just goes on in and finds it himself and comes out ready for battle! :-)
