Five Minute Friday: On Waiting

March 18, 2011

in Blogging,Faith,Five Minute Friday,Giveaways,Kids,Motherhood

This is the place where once a week we take the chance to
just write, and not worry if it’s just right or not.

For five minutes flat.

Here’s how the game works: you simply stop, drop and write. Set your words free. Don’t edit them, don’t fret over them, don’t try to make them perfect.

That’s how Five Minute Friday was born. Want to play? It’s fun. And it’s never too late to link up. Also? My friend Sara whipped up a hunky dory button for the occasion! You can grab the code over there in the right side bar. Then:

1. Write for only five minutes.
2. Link back here and invite others to play along.
3. Go high five the word artist who linked up before you with an awesome comment.

It’s liberating; give it a a try and see. And there’s this great reminder for one of you from DaySpring of how- with faith – we don’t wait in vain. (Jen won the red Life to the Full mug last week).

OK, are you ready? Give me your best five minutes for the prompt:

On Waiting….

GO

We are all waiting now. It’s not just me. It’s me and the boys. Peter’s sons are anxious and excited and counting days till they meet their sister. She’s the mystery that’s wrapped up in the swelling of my belly and they talk to her and try to wrap spindly arms wide enough to hug her.

I swell and sway and wrap myself in the cocoon of newness waiting to bloom.

We have ached with wait for years. Waiting for jobs, for home, for the jacaranda shore. Waiting for redemption from our own choices that rabbit trailed and stalled us. Waiting to find our way back. And at each dip and curve of the journey we have anticipated the wait to be over, searching the horizon for what comes next. It is hard to savor the wait.

But this baby and this week remind me that He is patient and His sense of time unlimited by the constraints of mine. That heaven knows what it is to wait and long and look for new life. So I hold it cupped in my palms, I let my boys press lips and ears up to the edge of the wait. And we taste every moment of it.

And every moment is good soul food.

STOP

OK, your turn – show me what you’ve got.

I had to read this twice, because by the second paragraph I could feel your rhythm and it began to taste a little like poetry. that taste that you want to linger in your mouth like slow melting chocolate. this image and getting to share in your joyful anticipation is good soul food to me :)

I agree with Sara – poetic rhythm and sensibility. Whenever I hear the word “waiting,” I think of the song “While I’m Waiting” by John Waller. I often think of how much I’m willing to give praise for a dream hatched and how I’ll surely praise Him when the dream unfolds – but have I let my hands drop and my voice be still while I wait for the good, missing the very good in each new moment?

Lovely! I very often think your writing is poetry and I couldn’t enjoy it more.

As I head to NC early in the morning to love on my now 4-month-old(!) grandson I am praying for you and all of your babies :)

Whether it is waiting to find our way back or waiting to see what lies ahead – no matter – I am learning that there is much worth in the wait.

I haven’t read your post yet. I will. I just wanted to tell you that I enjoyed that experience, though now that I’ve published it, I’m nervous as heck. But I’ll be back to try again. I think this unedited writing will be good for growing my humility. :)

There are two lines I especially loved – “His sense of time unlimited by the constraints of mine” and “every moment is good soul food.” Beautiful.

Praying for you during this time, and what a treasure to be found in the end of it!

‘That heaven knows what it is to wait and long and look for new life.’

Your Mama was right about great writing coming when we don’t think and just write…It makes me think of a favorite movie, ‘Finding Forrester’ too:) I always loving reading yours and joining along…thanks Lisa-Jo:-)

I know this anticipation. This is the most wonderful anticipation I think there may be, no matter the story that leads up to the moment.

Ahhh, I had to smile at Gitz’s comment; first, because I saw your prose as poetry, too, and second because she equated your writing to slow melting chocolate. I’d wager her comment is your MOST…FAVORITE…EVAH!!! :)

Oh, how I love the reason you chose this as your week’s writing prompt; I smile knowing what your family is awaiting :) . (Did you know I wrote a post yesterday largely inspired by your impending due date? I did…for real :) .)

And the funny thing is, I had planned on writing a version of the post I did today; it would have been “better”, certainly more thoughtful, deep, etc….but I liked having to speed-write, too, to get most of it in in time.

Off to read a few more submissions!

And how many times does the waiting turn out to be the most important part of the journey? Beautifully written.

I should have set a timer! I think I might have written for more than five minutes — newbie alert! Anyway, so much fun to wait for a new little one… though less fun when you’re the one carrying the babe. Such a cute picture!

Sorry for the multiple entries. I promise I’m not trying to cheat and win that faith sign (although it is awesome). I entered the link and it didn’t show, and then the web picture didn’t work so I tried another picture. I didn’t notice it until hours later. Computer…you win…you make me look like I’m crazy yet again.
