Five Minute Friday: Grit

February 24, 2012

in Faith,Five Minute Friday

Around here we write for five minutes flat on Fridays.

We write because we love words and the relief it is to just write them without worrying if they’re just right or not. So we take five minutes on Friday and write like we used to run when we were kids.

On Fridays we write like we believe we can fly. Won’t you join us? (<—Tweet this!)

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. Please visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments.

OK, are you ready? Give me your best five minutes on:

Grit…

GO

No one has it all together. No one gets it right 100% of the time.  No on is always wrong either.

We work on this thing called community. We work and sometimes it costs us in broken nails as we dig through all the layers of stuff no one’s willing to say out loud first. Sometimes it costs us in broken hearts when one of us gets tired of the work and calls time out.

Sometimes someone walks away.

Sometimes they don’t come back.

But sometimes some stay. They’re the blinking cursor at the end of my Skype box. They’re the call that does come. They’re the message at midnight that I am loved. That you are loved. That it’s messy and messy is OK.

We have permission to be broken if we’re willing to do the hard work of spit and glue and piecing the puzzle of our lives back together. Slowly. Over late nights of conversation and cold coffee.

Broken is always just the beginning of the story. Even when it feels like the end.

Just one more step sister. Up is just around the corner.

STOP

Hi Robin :-) Nice to meet you. Not many of us around and for us to post in a row is pretty ironic.

“…Sometimes they stay.”

It is those ones, the ones that stay, that make the risk worth it. I pray that God grows me into one of those “in-for-the-long-(and sometimes difficult)-haulers,” but also that He gives grace to free, no matter how much it hurts, those who choose to go.

Thanks for your post… thanks for this topic. Already, it has resonated with many.

Have a blessed weekend!

I love how you didn’t even mention the word grit…but we all know what you’re talking about. Great post.

I found this challenge at Gypsy Nurse, and thought I should try! Not sure if I do it right, or is there a theme for each week?

Great post, and I am that “no one has it all together” kind of gal!

“it costs us in broken nails as we dig through all the layers of stuff no one’s willing to say out loud first.” Hm, yes. And yes to “Up is just around the corner.” Encouraging.

“permission to be broken” . . . love the timing of this, b/c i was just in the middle of writing about this very thing. and sharing all we need to do is surrender to Him, let Him do “the hard work of spit and glue and piecing the puzzle of our lives back together.”

oh how many times i’ve tried it on my own, & how many times he lovingly, gently, & oh so patiently calls me to simply give Him my broken pieces . . .

Hi Lisa-Jo,

Hope it was ok to put my post into your list of links. As I’d just published a post about mess, it fitted with your theme of grit, but it doesn’t have any mention of 5-minute Friday in it.

“Broken is always just the beginning of the story. Even when it feels like the end.”

Wow! This is so true. I’ve been broken for a couple of months and am just now starting to accept that this is a new season of growing for me – a new beginning.

Can I just tell you how much I look forward to reading your posts? You always seem to be talking right to my heart!

Thank you so much…

Just sat out in my car with a roll of toilet tissue to blow my “ugly cry” nose. Broken heart for a hurting friend (topic of my grit post) and grieving heart over a BFF no more. I don’t know what happened. One day we were getting pedicures for her b’day and next thing I know…boom. No more BFF. We’re friendly but not close any more. Your post talked me off a scary ledge tonight, Lisa-Jo. Thanks so much.

“Broken is always just the beginning of the story. Even when it feels like the end.”

These words are so powerful because they are so true. I have lived these words, at my most broken, thinking it was the end. Then God showed me otherwise. Utter brokenness and total surrender led to a new birth, a new beginning. To Him be all the praise. Only He can take the grit and grime and wash us with grace and truth and beauty.

Beautiful post, Lisa Jo. Beautiful.
