Un-lurk Here
So, here’s the deal: I love getting stamps in my passport. They remind me of everywhere I’ve been and jolt me with memories of great places and faces.
I’d like to remember you. So, I would love you to stamp my page.
I understand one doesn’t want to log a comment on every post, but if you put one here I’ll know you visited. And that will make me very happy.
So, if you are a regular reader and want to make my day, please introduce yourself – I’d love to hear where you’re from, what you like about visiting here and just about anything else that you feel like sharing.
Feel free to stamp with words or your blog badge. Either works for me.

Lisa-Jo!
How wonderful to see you and Peter and your beautiful family in these pictures! And to read about your life and catch up a bit!
This is a great blog Lisa-Jo and a tribute to the great people you and Peter are.
Love to de-lurk! And I gave you a blog award today: Splash!
Cuz, I have spent all afternoon on your amazing blog, catching up on all the bits I have missed over the past few months. I love your blog – it is so beautifully written, but more than that, I love the insight I get into your wonderful family that I miss so much. I love beign able to follow the little guys as they grow up, and to follow the lessons you are learning as you go. The only issue I have with you at this point is that everytime I leave here, I leave broody
You are an incredible mom, someday I hope I can be as awesome at momness as you cuz. Much love, Hannah
I’m loving your blog, too! And wouldn’t this be cool if people could literally stamp your page here? =-D I’d have mine say:

Hehee…that kinda mess takes me back~!
Hey, thanks for the comment about Piknic. Will have to try it. Hard to “try” much with 4 monkeys running amuck. I love your writing. It’s very eloquent and insightful. I hope my own can mature to occasionally be like that. Or, maybe I’m the one who needs maturing. LOL
So if you see Mankato on your tracker that’s me. And thanks for the comments. I rarely get them but always appreciate them.
Love the idea of stamping your blog/passport. I am dropping in from Bowie, MD.
Thanks for sharing your life in your blog. It’s great to read about the life & times of another globe-trotter. I too have lived and travelled the world over. I grew up in Iowa, USA and taught in Seoul, South Korea when I finished university. I spent the last 12 years in Australia and God took me through some very difficult times but I learned more of HIM. Now I am a newly-wed and find myself in another new place- Inverness, Scotland. You are right that HOME is not a place but a person…. we center our HOME on Him…. wherever that is. We long to be with people all over the world in places that we lived and left. That’s why heaven will be so great…. loving the LORD together with our fellow believers. Your writing is beautifully honest and refreshing. Thank you!
Hi! I read your entry on incourage today and came to find your blog! So glad to know about you! Am also following you on twitter, I am @frelle
Hi from Massachusetts! Just found your blog from (in)courage and can’t wait to read more.
Blessings!
Greetings Lisa-Jo,
In fact, he doesn’t even like pizza! I really love your writing about the oh-so-worth-it, but sometimes trying gap between the fantasy in our heads and the real rubber-meets-the-road moments of life. I look forward to following your blog!
I found you through (In)Courage and am delighted to have found you! I was born in Iowa, lived in British Columbia, Canada before I moved to California when I was 18. I frequently feel like a fish-out-of-water, but like you, have made a life and a home with a wonderful man with different pizza tastes than mine
Hey Lisa-Jo!
I just found you through encourage. I’ve read through a few posts and added you as a blog to follow because I really love your writing! I’m looking forward to continue reading.
-Kelli
Hi Lisa-Jo!
I just saw you on my blogfrog so I popped over to see who you are. Wow, what an interesting history you have! I admire your adventurous spirit! I can’t wait to delve into your blog more. I will be coming back often to catch up on your travels and life. Thanks for stopping in to my little blog. How did you find me?
Melissa (born, raised & lived in the South all my life!)
Stopping in from Nashville, TN
Used your new address and really got caught up tonight 10-23-09. Love your journal but especially the tribute to Mother-In-Law. We think both of you are “iron women” (comes from Gma) cause you excell at multi-tasking 24-7. Thank you so very much for raising our beautiful great-grandsons and even having some fun in the process. Better yet, keep teaching them about Jesus. What joy to see and read about how they are growing up so fast, incredible! We sure miss all of you so much but your blog really gives us a visit over the miles. By the way, our SKYPE is up and running – (hint) when you have a little time ring us up. Again, thanks for what you do to keep us close. Much love!
A new favorite blog for me!
Thanks- I’ll be back to read some more!
Just found your blog from Like a Warm Cup of Coffee and your guest post there. I adore what you wrote there… so many truths to it. Thank you for sharing! I’ll be back to read more.
I look forward to reading your blog and exploring your adventures.
Saw your blog from Like a Warm Cup of Coffee, also. I was intrigued so I came to visit… boy am I thankful I did! The blog about our oxygen mask really hit home for me after the rough week I’ve had. Thank you so much! I’ll be back for sure!
I found you through another blog – I can’t remember which one. The post you wrote last week “He sees me” was outstanding.
I am new but I am sure will be around alot more now that I have found your writing. You have a great way of putting things down. God Bless.
– Jen in Palatine, IL
Every entry is so true, but better said by you through your engaging style of writing. I will continue to check in here often from Alaska.
Found you through Harvard Housewife (HOW). Will definitely be back! Cheers from Murfreesboro TN!
Hey Lisa Jo! So wonderful to read and catch up on you! You guys have been busy – sounds very exciting! I salute your beautiful blog and your amazing words here…you’re a very gifted writer! Are you on Facebook? I looked for you but couldn’t find you. God bless!

hey guys
i think i’ll be first here from Kyiv, Ukraine!
thanks for your blog and your writing. you’re good at it
you should write a book sometime – gonna be a bestseller!
We’ll see if this works – trying to ‘stamp’ your passport.
Can’t remember if it was from (in)courage or Like A Warm Cup Of Coffee. But I just loved your writing. And I’m South African. And have never left so I don’t own a passport but thanks for letting me stamp yours.
Thanks for the reminder Lisa Jo, God used you to bless me today.
Let’s see…my name is Crystal and I was born and raised in Michigan (can I get an Amen!!?). I was in South Africa for a one-year internship with Thrive Africa (2008) where I met Alece who in turn sort of led me to your blog through hers.
Officially unlurking! I am Emily and I have been stopping by here since running into you somewhere in the blogosphere after I started blogging this autumn. I appreciate so much your comments on my blog and I love to read what is happening with you! You have a calming and inspiring voice.
I just came to your blog through InCourage. Your post today really spoke to my heart. I’m looking forward to reading more.
Oh-I’m in Nashville, TN. Originally from the Chicago area, but I’ve been here in Nashville for almost 17 years now (wow, has it really been that long?)
Popped in today from InCourage and am smitten! Must go tend to my boys now, because I’ve spent too long reading your posts.
But I will be back again and again!
Jen (New Mexican-turned Mainer)
Some places are just too good to pass up, this spot is one of’em. I just love curling up with my computer and reading these posts. Right now we live in Texas, but have traveled many, many a time…overseas, I’ve lived in Okinawa, Japan and Bad Windsheim, Germany and several southern states in the the south plus Indiana & Kentucky from the Midwest. Hopefully, I’m stamping the last one here in TX, unless God packs me and family up again.
Hi, my name is Paula and I’ve arrived here through (In)Courage. Your post there today was fabulous (even though the experience that gave you the wisdom and insight to share with us wasn’t).
I live in St. Paul, MN and have been here for about 4 years – after growing up in Wisconsin, living in Oregon, the Washington, DC metro area and a little stint in Scottsdale, AZ. I really look forward to reading more of your posts!
Stamp! I’m here from (in)courage and enjoyed reading your post over there today. What a fascinating life you have! I live in Honolulu, Hawaii and work part time as a nanny.
De-lurking! Love your site.
Hi Lisa-Jo,
I’ve been encouraged by your posts both here and at (in)courage, where I found you.
We’ve just moved to Virginia from Canada and it’s all a little new and different.
Keep up the great work!
Officially de-lurking! I am a 50-something year old missionary grandma. I live in the UK presently, but spent 17 years in Indonesia where we raised our 2 children, who are now married and preparing for missionary service themselves. Have lived for shorter periods in the Philippines and Syria, and expect to return to live in the Middle East soon. I stubbled on your blog one day when I went from http://www.aholyexperience.com to (in)courage. I was intrigued by the title, feeling a kinship there. I enjoy your writing, your love for Him, and for your family. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Love your site!
Grace from Johannesburg, South Africa.
Okay, I’ll unlurk. Love that idea. I came across you by Sarah Mae and (in)Courage. I love your enthusiasm and encouragement, so I plan on being by again.
I blog over at Extravagant Grace, a place for me to pour out my thoughts and encourage women in the Lord, as I reflect on the lessons God is teaching me about His grace and transforming power.
Blessings, extravagantly,
eLisa
I’m so glad we have found each other. Seriously. Like. So glad.
Passport stamp from Nashville, Tennessee. Done and done.
I have no idea how I found you but you now live in my Google Reader.
I’m from Australia. I just read your posts on “Is there life after NO?” and they are really resonating with me…
Greetings from the Nevada desert where we homeschool six children, run a few businesses, and worship a God who led His people OUT of the desert…our turn is coming.
I enjoy your honesty. I love real Christians with dirt under their nails. Thank you for your messages.
I believe I found you through (in)courage.
Hi there,
I’ve only now discovered your blog. I’ll definately come back- keep up the good work.
Hello Lisa Jo! This is my first time stopping by your blog. I found you on twitter. Nice to “meet” you!
Nice blog, I’ll steal some of your ideas for my own. I’ve traveled a bit, including to Jo’burg, and am now a stay-at-home dad. I’ll be back.
i found your blog via (in)courage and have been checking it everyday since with all my other daily reads. thank you so much for your honesty and boldness. it’s so refreshing! -lindsey
Howzit!!
Yeah..that probably gave it away hey?
I’m from Johannesburg, South Africa too. Although, I was born in Zambia, and grew up in Zimbabwe & UK too. And, my family & I are currently living in Houston, Texas. I call it ‘Our Great Adventure’.
I’m so glad I stumbled upon your blog, I’m grappling with the whole expat thing, and have been encouraged by your posts!! I’ll be visiting you every day now
Officially un-lurking.
And sending a stamp from Germany.
Thanks for your words/thoughts/dreams/hopes. Always nice to hear from another cross-cultural marriage.
i forget how i found your blog. but i have been so encouraged by you and your writing. i feel like we have so much in common and i feel like many of your posts express some of my feelings and thoughts.
i am a missionary kid who has been in Nigeria and the Netherlands. it seems that my whole life has been missing one place or another.
i married a man from a small southern town – which is pretty “cross-cultural” for me, lol – and for now that is where we have chosen to settle. (my parents still live in the Netherlands and my siblings in the northern USA.) i never really wanted to be a mother but god has blessed us with 2 beautiful boys (2yrs & almost 5yrs).
thanks for taking the time to blog.
Hi Lisa-Jo, I’m not sure how I found your blog (maybe through @mylestones on twitter?) but I’m loving it.
I also have the traveling bug, although I’ve been basically Southern-California-bound for the last several years in grad school. And I lived in DC for a year in my restless youth and just fell in love with the city. I’ve been nosing around your blog and I can’t wait to read more.
Hi Lisa-Jo! I am stamping your page from South Orange County, California! I also twitter, most recently from my business, @socialpreneurs, or @teresalolvera. I created Society of Socialpreneurs ~ Where Socializing is Our Business a couple years ago and I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do! Anyways, nice to meet you!

I have to add my stamp! I’m LeAnna from Oklahoma, and I found you through in(courage) and immediately fell in love with your beautiful bloggin’ heart *gush gush gush* – you always have a word that touches the deepest places of a Momma’s soul, with Jesus as the center, and I love it.
*STAMP* from Geneva Switzerland (actually just across the border in France)
Have tracked your site for a while now, originally found thru fellow ND grad friends.
your writing is beautiful, your heart even more so…and I am privileged to know that first hand!
love and blessings,

No idea how I found you, (Twitter perhaps?) but ever so happy I have….your newest fan sends you sunshine and smiles from Texas……
Having lived overseas all my life, (including J’burg, S.A), and a busy mother of four….i can relate tremendously…thank you for sharing your beautiful life and words with us…..x
Hey! I am just getting to know you and would love for you to follow me on Twitter. Visit my bloggy to find out more and share a cup of coffee or two. Then we can chat and swap even more awesome stories.
Hi, from Japan! I just clicked over from another blog, and really enjoyed looking around. Lovely blog! I’m looking forward to reading more.
Lisa-Jo,
Ann just sent me over here…and bless her. I haven’t even had time to “dig” into knowing you. But O, I wish for all the time in the world!!
I am so curious where you went to school. Was it Messiah? I was born in Lancaster County, PA, just outside Harrisburg and Philly; I guess directly between them. Went to LBC. Graduated. Taught for a year in the states, saw my life fall apart. Began grad school classes. Started directing theatre at the university I was doing grad school. Was offered to come “start” a school in SA and here I am! About 2 hours north of lovely Pretoria in Limpopo.
I LOVE South Africa. Of course I have struggles on and off with the language and culture which is normal growing up one place and living somewhere else. But its lovely. Truly lovely.
Anyway, I was just too excited hearing about you being from SA to not comment right away!!
Bless you, today!
I’m un-lurking officially! I live in Charlotte, NC although I am not originally from here. Born in England (dad was in the American Air Force). I have traveled quite extensively but there are many more places I want to go… Like South Africa!
I think I found you via Holy Experience–so glad I did!
Stamping the blog with a hello from Portland, Oregon.
Can I be your first Canadian stamp? Hope so!
Your blog is great!
Wow. I found you through (In)Courage, which I found from another blog that had posted to it, and goodness, I can’t figure out how I missed you all this time. I can SO relate. I lived in the same state for 22 years, and then I met my husband. We’ve lived in South Korea for 3 years where son #1 was born, back in the states for 2 years, Turkey for two years where son #2 was born, and now we’re in Thailand. I am a God-fearing Christian, but this moving all over the world is not what I thought I’d signed up for, so I’m not always a willing party. However, I totally see His hand in every place I go. I just really struggle with the lack of stability. I am encouraged by your attitude and similarities, and look forward to following you. God bless a fellow sister in Christ.
My SIL just sent me to your blog that she stumbled upon randomly.
I just started reading, and loved the post about talking to your son about Easter. I have an almost 4 yr. old son, a 2 yr. old daughter, and a 2 mo. old son. I’m looking forward to following your blog.
Hi!
My friend’s family moved here from South Africa, and moved back there 4 years ago. They are again in the States applying for citizenship, and once they get it they are going back to South Africa to continue their mission work, building up orphanages in a program they started called Emoyeni (http://www.emoyeni.org).
I just thought your “About Me” was interesting so I thought I would sent a post
Hi Lisa-Jo! I stumbled upon your blog and have been enjoying it ENORMOUSLY! I am also a foreigner from across the Ocean married to an American. We met in the US, went back to Italy (my home country) and got married there, went back to the States to finish school and went ahead and had baby boy #1. When he was about to turn one (he did so on the plane, en route to Europe) we moved back to Italy, where we lived for a couple of years, saved money and had baby girl #2! When she was 16 months old, it was time to cross the ocean YET one more time, to go back to the US and finish that M. Div. hubby had left hanging due to lack of funds. We did it, and also managed to add baby girl #2 while there. Next? How about recrossing the ocean, with our stuff, one more child, and have ourselves yet another lovely cross oceanic move? So we did that! And then, we added baby boy #2 once we had settled back in Italy. Now, you can see why I really like reading your blog: long, exhausting flights? Check! Children born on two different continents? Check! Pizza toppings? Check! Double wedding ceremony? Half check (we only had a US reception…) Not owning a TV? Check! Freaked out cable guy? Check! Except that mine was RUDE and told me all I neede to do was go to any supermarket and buy one. Imagine what he said when he found out we did NOT want a TV and that it was by choice, not because we had no idea where to buy one! Ha! Anyway, life on two continents with kids and multiple cultural tidbits… I find your writing very encouraging and funny! Oh, did I mention my own Prince Charming is from Michigan as well???
Ok, I think I’ve been here enough to be an official reader. Hi. I was born and raised in East Texas, and am now a missionary in Arequipa, Peru. I’m pretty sure I found you through (in)courage, but can’t rightly recall at this moment…probably because I have two kids and remembering things is a luxury I’ve had to let go. I appreciate your perspective on the things that matter in life and your ability to help us all laugh (and/or cry) about the parts that end up kind of wacky.
Love the idea of un-lurking, by the way.
Howzit from the homeland (yours)! I am an Aussie who is living in Durbs after six years in Hong Kong. Its quite the lifestyle change I can tell you.
Our family is currently enjoying the South African slower pace and laid back lifestyle – the politics is also amusing – but I’m guessing only if you’re not from here. Enjoyed looking at your blog – always great to see the other side of the coin.
Hi Lisa-Jo – Stamping your blog and officially un-lurking! Your blog has encouraged me through laughter and tears over the last several weeks since I began visiting. Thank you for sharing your life – it’s one well-lived (and well-told)!
I’m from Texas, loved living in Colorado, and now back in East Texas.
Peace,
Tami
Visiting you from Miami, FL. I’ll be following along from this day forward.
Glad to know there is plenty of other geographically mixed up people out there – this is a stmp from Cape Town by an Irish girl married to a Malawian. The world can only be a better place when we learn to mix cultures and appreciate our differences.
Hi tcsoko,
I like your view about the mixing and ‘shaking it all up’ of the cultures and finally leading to a real “global village”! Great outlook.
-Browneyed
Enjoying your blog–found it via Holy Experience. I’m in the DC area, too (Arlington, on the Orange Line)! Let me know if you’re in the neighborhood–coffee will be on me.
Thanks for writing.
I just found your site and LOVE it. Really. You write in a way I can only hope to some day. I love the voice that comes through. I’ll be back!
Hello. I stumbled upon your blog tonight and began reading. Your whole series on the year that God said no really has touched my heart. We went through something similar last year, we had lived overseas with the US miltiary for 4 years..4 years away from home and for 2 years before that we were 19 hours away from home in the midwest. We found out we were expecting while living in the UK and then hope and prayed for orders to an air force base right in our hometown. We got the orders! Then we had the baby…everything felt as if it was falling into place perfectly. We would have a new baby and finally be surrounded by all of our family and friends. Then the airforce and God said no….and 3 weeks before our port call date our orders were changed..first to Japan, then Minot ND, and finally to Oklahoma City OK. where we now reside. I recently was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and going through this battle without they physical closenss of family has been very hard on us and i have struggled with why God would take our orders away. But tonight..your blog opened my eyes…God isn’t a vending machine…and He does desire our holiness. Thank you..I have been wondering, not understanding why this all happened in the way it did. But I see now..I think I see that this thyroid cancer has taken all the strength I’ve ever had and I’ve had to learn to rely on His strength alone. My relationship with Jesus has grown ever so much in the past few months. And I don’t know if that would be the case had we ended up close enough to the love and comfort of family. So thank you!
Just found your blog (preparing to launch a blog), I have a grandson now, but pray with several young women so I love the family stories (besides brings back memories). Attended 12 schools in 12 years of school, lived in 10 states (some 3x’s), visited all but 3 and since I worked for an airline (retired now), I have been blessed to travel to many places, especially in the M. E. After many years volunteering in international outreach, I now direct an inner city (Orlando) ministry centered around a community garden that offers descipleship, music, art and tutoring. We “grow fresh food with our neighbors,” showing God’s love through His creation. Your stories stir in me an an immense desire to pack a bag and go “somewhere.” Once, with 2 hrs notice, my 12 yr old packed my bag, Grandma brought it to the airport and was on a plane to Seoul. Miss those days. Thanks for letting me live vicariously for a bit. If your family visits Orlando, please come to our garden. We may even have rooms available in our 1925 era house.
Hey!
Well, am a newbie, well sorta, on your corner of the web, and I like reading you.
About me, I am a writer, amd I love every piece of my life with it. I live in the land Down under – Australia – under the Melbournian sky, with awesome surrounds and lovely weather almost all the year round. I love every part of my day, well most of the times, and much of it is my hubby’s doing
All in all, I have a positive outlook toward life, and I love what you write as well, because I sense the “happiness sprinkles” in your life-smoothie too!
Love & hugs,
BrownEyed
I’m totally the same: love to get the stamps in my passport! I married last June and therefore needed to get a new passport with my new name. I loathed doing it! But, my husband was insistent as it would help un-complicate future traveling as we live in Romania. Just got my first new stamp last week: Moldova.
Would love for you to stop my blog when you have a chance!
Hi! Just wanted to let you know that I totally stole your de-lurk idea and put it on my own blog! Hope you don’t mind!
Loving your blog!
Hi Lisa-Jo,
I am so enjoying reading your blogs. Growing up with you in our childhoods, coasting by each other it has been revealing – in a good way – to see the real you. I will let you know if we are coming your way any time soon. We are planning to make some head roads to North Carolina, so maybe we can make a drive up to you.
Following you and adding you to my blogroll. I love authenticity, beauty, reverence, joy and laughter. Thanks for sharing your heart here. –Godspeed, Elizabeth…from across the states in Portland, Oregon
Lovely to meet you too. Thanks for saying hi – one of the best parts of writing is the shared conversation that it can evolve into. I love Africa, cherry blossoms, raising boys, and the written word. And I’ve been to Portland, Oregon and could live happily ever after in Powells Book store!!
Just found you via Ann Voskamp’s Holy Experience. So glad I popped over. The splinter analogy was so helpful. Thanks for sharing your heart…
Just found you thru A Holy Experience, a link to your post about splinters to the heart.
I have 2 wonderful daughters with many splinters, as you say. from me. from my own upbringing. What kind of tweezers do I need to pull them out?
I think I would like to stay awhile, gleen some more, heal some more.
If you were to come visit, you would get a stamp from Denton, Texas. Home of Uof North Texas and Texas womens Uni. Just down the road from Dallas and Fort Worth. Denton is very big in the music arena. Midlake, Doug Burr, Sarah Jaffe, Seryn all come from here. Norah Jones as well.
I don’t have a blog, yet.
Just delighted to find your blog! Thank you for how you encourage and bless.
OK I’m going to try this! Unlurking with my blog badge.

And it didn’t work.
Ah well, I’m here from Eastern Washington (the real Washington, hehe).
I fixed it for you
Love to see some blog badges on this page!
WOW – that’s a lot of de-lurking happening up there!
I’m Julie — will be going to Relevant so I’ve been periodically lurking your blog to learn a little more about you! I’m from Holland, Michigan – home of the famous Tulip Festival (which I will be highlighting on my blog tomorrow BTW.)
Not sure what else you’d like to know — single 30-something and loves loves loves to travel.
Blessings!
Hello from Austin
I was introduced to you via twitter, and sent to your blog via @prudychick. Love your words – love this blog. I’ve already subscribed.
Hello from a small town called Ridgefield, WA!
My name is Jen, and I accidentally stumbled across your blog about 3-4 days ago – and I am in love with this blog! I have been so overwhelmed with the love, grace, and wisdom that flows from your writing.
God certainly has blessed you with a special, special gift…and we in turn are blessed by this gift.
I can’t wait to read each day’s post!
Much love in Him,
Jen
I am so excited to find your blog via (in)courage. I am an American expat living in Hong Kong with my husband and five children. How exciting to find another blogger who loves having her passport stamped and knows the complications of living “in between”. Looking forward to following your gypsy journal!
Love & Blessings from Hong Kong,
Kim
Very interesting blog! Maria in Montego Bay, Jamaica
Hello! Stopping by from Upstate New York! And I’ll soon be moving to Bristol, England to marry my English fiance! I think you have a lovely blog, very original and interesting!
Stamping your passport from Key West, FL! I just found your blog yesterday and I love it. I can’t stop reading your older posts.
I could get lost for days on this blog! I love your words and I am happy to meet you. How blessed you are with your little human burritos!
I will remember that when I wrap up my own burritos fresh out of the tub tonight in Massachusetts. Be well.
A stamp coming from SW Florida!
I found your blog via Twitter & I’m really enjoying it.
I found your blog this morning when I noticed I had a few new followers. (Puzzling since I haven’t written much lately.) One of them is another Jenni without a profile pic or blog of her own, but I saw she follows your blog and the name caught my eye. I just read your 5/24/10 entry and want to thank you for writing it. It’s just what I needed to read this morning. I’m adding you to my blog list and will be linking that post on Facebook and Twitter. If I needed to read it, maybe someone else does too.
Hello from South Georgia.
Your blog is very encouraging. And all us Jesus-followers with llittle flocks of our own need as much encouragement as we can get, yes?
~Amy Danielle
Found you through Holy Experience and am loving what I read!
De-lurking! Was seeking some new “great reads” and Annette from An American Tale sent me your way.
Have only glanced thus far, but am loving what I’m reading!
I love to load up my reader with blogs that are written by women of faith!
Happily added yours today!
Jenn (http://paperphan.wordpress.com)
I’m sitting in my little apartment in Arlington, VA and happened to find the link you gave me a while ago to this site and the time to actually read! I love it! From the moment I met you I sensed our Father’s presence in you from your openness and honesty and insight to your genuine interest in talking with me. Thanks for being real. I’m sure reading these posts will be another way of hearing from Him through you. Looking forward to it!
Glad i found you! love this un.Lurk idea!
)
Here’s a stamp from San Diego, CA. Found you through twitter and I love the way this site conveys your heart and journey! My journey is in one location but with “different people” every day – raising two adopted daughters with bipolar and two biological daughters… Used to travel all over the world and so excited to find a kindred spirit online and have a place to hear about the world from another mom!!

Lisa-Jo,
I came across “After God Says No” via a random email from Dayspring….and landed here… Was encouraged by your words re “After God Says No.” – And find your life story and travels fascinating! – God may have said No on occasion, but He’s given you a wonderfully, fascinating life that you are now using to encourage others.
From Philly!
-Heidi
I came across your blog also from the email from Dayspring. Keep writing – you’re a blessing!
Hi, Lisa-Jo!
I’m stopping by from Phoenix, Arizona after reading in(Courage) today. I’ve been so blessed by your writing!
I wish my passport had more stamps in it, only two so far, but I’m hoping for more! I’ll be coming back soon!
Blessings!
Bahamas here, I flew in via incourage. Love your blog and your beautiful way of sharing your heart. I’ll be back to visit again.
Hi, Lisa-Jo! Thank you so much for sharing your testimony on God’s “no” answers! It was a blessing and encouragement to read. The Lord used it to minister to me today! God’s blessings to you!!
Lisa-Jo,
I, too found your blog through Dayspring’s email today. What a blessing! I am a bit of a “gypsy” myself, having lived in 9 states and visiting all but 2 (so far). So many times I got blindsided by a move and experienced some of what you describe in the “No” entries. Through it all the one thing that was constant was my faith and, I have to admit, questions about how God could have such different plans than I did. I am better for it all, more contented and happy than I ever was when I was just smiling and not admitting that I didn’t get it. He eventually showed me his plans and I imagine there may be more “no’s” in my future because we can’t let ourselves (nor can He let us) get complacent in our faith. I thank God that He blessed you with such wonderful “yes-es”!
I read you for the first time today and was very encouraged by your When God says No article. It is very inspiring and thank you for sharing your story. May God continue to Bless you and your family.
Danielle P from Pittsburgh, Pa.
Thanks for very encouraging piece, When God say No.
I am a gypsy-mama with four girls from Malaysia.
God Bless!

Hi from the Philippines! Read your blog from (In) Courage. Thanks for sharing your heartwarming and inspiring story.
Your”Is there life after No, part 1″ was posted on Dayspring Devotions which I automatically get in my inbox. This took me to your blog to get parts 2,3, & 4. Thank you for sharing your story and the lessons you have learnt. You have a gift to communicate well by written word. I have been blessed to read these today!
from the big city of Toronto, Canada
That didn’t work. Let me try again!
Love this idea! So I’m stamping!
Hi! I found you through (in)courage and am enthralled with your story! I lived abroad in Shanghai, China for a year with a toddler and love hearing about everyone else’s travels!
I understand your loss … the pain of loss is profound and you have expressed it well. It gives us courage to move forward into the unknown with God and trust His heart even when we cannot see His hand. It helps us to know that there are others out there who know our pain as well. Thank you.
Hi! We are currently in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where my husband is directing a Christian orphanage for girls. We are homeschooling our three little blondes and hugging on lots of precious Asian girls over here. It’s proving to be one of the most gritty and most rewarding things we’ve ever done.
I have loved visiting here at your blog, and I will definitely be back again and often. Thanks for sharing so honestly and beautifully.
Love this idea!! Wanted you to know that I was here, found my way here from “We Are That Family”…

Thank you for the beautiful word pictures you share! Have thoroughly enjoyed every minute I’ve spent on your blog today! I found you via a tweet from @Beautyandbedlam. I look forward to reading more…dee (SF Bay area-California)
It is a crime — A CRIME — that I have been friends with you on Twitter but haven’t clicked through to your blog until now. What a piece of art. I love your writing, I love your spirit, I love the God I see in you.

via (In)Courage.
Lisa-Jo,
I have spent the past couple of hours scouring your blog stories…thank you for sharing your life with us. Beautiful…just beautiful!
Was so refreshed in reading When the Walls are Closing In recently. It was like water to my thirsty soul!
Thanks,
Lisa
Hello! Just poking around your site in Sydney, Australia. Enjoying your posts on marriage
Blessings!
Emma
I just stumbled here, I can’t even remember how!! haha, but I love your blog already and will be following you! I’m from Washington State, I live on a little island, and stay home with 2 young boys. I traveled quite a bit before I got married, and I love to read about other people’s travels
Hey Lisa-Jo!
I love those passport stamps too and just had to leave one here for you! I went to South Africa a couple years ago with Thrive Africa and fell in love with the country, her people, her land. I will definitely be coming back to keep reading.
I’ve been blogging for about 2 years over at Joie de Vivre. It’s always great to meet new blogging friends!
Hannah Ruthie
I’ve just started reading your blog regularly, after being directed here frequently by links from Ashleigh’s Tweets.
And how could I not love it…with the postage stamp theme?! Looks like we both have a thing for letters and postage stamps.
Looking forward to reading more…
Just am amazed at how moved I am by your blog. Thank you . It’s beautiful.
Oh. I should have not been posting and talking to my husband at the same time.
I am from SE Tennessee right on the GA border.
I just found you blog through some friends on Twitter, and am thoroughly enjoying reading through your posts. My dad is South African, and my mom is a Brit… I grew up in various countries in Africa as a missionary kid, met my hubby at boarding school there, we went to college here in the US and got married in South Africa half-way through college. Our families are both overseas (Kenya and South Africa). We now live in Dallas, and I’m currently in the middle of trying to get my green card through marriage to a US citizen… such a hassle!
Anyways… I just wanted to say that I love your blog because it feels like a piece of home… knowing that someone else is living the gypsy life, and I love that your faith shines through it all
Thanks so much for your wonderful blog. Your thoughts are so spot on – great words of encouragement for me with my boys, now aged 2 and 5. Great reading perspectives of a Saffa in the US… would love to meet you sometime when you’re home, if you’re up for a tweet-up of sorts with a bunch of strangers!
I’m so glad I came across your site!
I have come to LOVE your blog. I found it through InCourage. I especially LOVE your insights and humorous tales of motherhood. I am also a mom of boys (ages 4, 2, and 1 more due in just a few weeks).
Hi
I’m Melinda, from Chicago.
Not sure when I found your blog, but am thinking it was in the fall sometime…
I love it here cause you make me laugh.
also, you’re in my google reader and even when my blogs pile up for a month or so, i ALWAYS read ALL of yours.
so… thanks for being awesome!
I came across your blog from Southern Institue for Domestic Arts.
You are an amazing writer. You catch my attention; with the first few words of each post, I’m hooked!
I am recently unemployed and having a difficult time with the emotions of myself and my husband, who has been unemployed for 2 years now. I have one son who does not understand what we are going through as a family right now, BUT…
this was the first post I read of yours and it captured my heart:
http://thegypsymama.com/2010/08/when-we-discover-holy-ground-where-we-least-expect-it/
No matter what I am going through, I want to leave a legacy of love with my son. Yesterday was a bad day. Lots of yelling with emotions spilling out. Not happy, not loving emotions. Then I remember the question: What am I leaving my son? I’ve tried to make up for it today. Playing at the park, library time, lots of smiles and giggles! But I know the damage has been done and it will take more than one day to clean up the angry words and confusion that my five year old is feeling.
Anyway, your words are wonderful, heartfelt, and encouraging. Thank you!
Forgot to mention: I’m in Brentwood, CA, near San Fransisco. Actually trying to move up to Portland, OR soon!
Hi Gypsy Mama, love your blog. My name is Natalie and I’m a friend of Kim Ballantine( one of the mad cows!) She forwarded your site to me because she thought I would enjoy your writing style.. she was right. It’s gentle and authentic, and I’ll definitely be following. Hope you get a chance to take a peak of mine.
x Nan
Morning!
I officially de-lurked on your birthday this morning after being so moved by your post, My Zululand, My Birthday.
You are a beautiful writer.
Warmly,
Hyacynth
Not sure how I stumbled upon your blog…funny how that works. Here is my stamp! I am a busy wife and mother serving the best I know how and trying to learn more each day. We have two children that live with us:) Eldan age 4 and Evelyn age 2 (she is a redhead by the way). One baby in heaven and one on the way. Life is full.
Happy Birthday Lisa-Jo!
I have been here a few times via links from other blogs I regularly read. As I was reading your post today I just thought, “I always love what I read here–why do I not have her in my Reader?” So as soon as I am done de-lurking you will be added!
I am from Indiana originally, but I married an Aussie and now live in Australia. My sister lives in Chicago and we write each other on http://letters2mysister.wordpress.com. We are brand-new baby bloggers, but you are welcome to come by and, well, lurk.
Cheers,
Sarah
I have found your blog via (In)Courage and it is so encouraging to me. My husband is South African and I am an American missionary kid born and raised in Haiti until the age of 16. I have been reading through MANY of your posts the past few days and I can relate to SO MUCH! I have spent so much of my life wanting to “fit in” and never did. In college (university) I eventually embraced my “different-ness” and then eventually got accused of “trying” to be different. HA! We have been married for 5 years (this coming Friday – YAY!). We lived the first 2 years in America and the last 3 in South African and we are preparing now to immigrate in the next month back to America for a season of seeking & searching the next step that God has for us. I love reading your posts because I SO, SO, SO “get” the feelings of missing home and the feeling of knowing that either country that you live in one of the two of you is a fish out of water. I also love the fact of knowing that this extra pressure/stress/dynamic in our marriage has pulled us together is such a beautiful way that not everyone can get…..understanding and communicating in a bi-cultural marriage is ALWAYS and adventure! Thanks for sharing your heart, your family, your life with all of us!
I just started following (in)Courage on twitter and saw your name listed on the account. I found your blog through their website and I’m so glad I did! I love your story and I can’t wait to read more! Blessings!
I’m enjoying your blog. Great mix of family, borders, and adventure.
Hi Lisa Jo – I was reading through the (In) Courage contributors and did a double take when I saw you! Hard to believe it’s been 9 years since Notre Dame. Well, wanted to let you know that the posts about your mom really resonate with me. I recently lost my dad to brain cancer and I still have a hard time believing that he won’t get to see my son grow up and he never got to meet my daughter. He would have turned 61 on September 13th. I’m so glad I found your blog and look forward to reading about your trip!
Hi there! Over here following the Compassion blog updates.
Love it here! Can’t wait to look around more!
Hello! I have been a silent reader for a while now. I feel comforted when reading your words on the screen. You have such a gift and its refreshing to see you using that gift to glorify Him!
I’m looking forward to following you Compassion trip in Guatemala! I pray that one day I have the opportunity to participate in a trip like that and share with others!
Oh, I just love your blog! I found on the Compassion website!
What a wonderful collection of life stories, written by such an amazing God and penned by you. I certainly didn’t move as far or as many times as you, but I know what it means to “go and follow love.”
I always think of this song… Ruth would have liked it, don’t you think?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmIAD0nKDWM&feature=related
I left my family in MICHIGAN (so happy you got a Midwest boy
…) to follow love to Connecticut. My husband and I got married in November 2009 and are expecting our first Baby in Feb 2011! So there’s my travel stamp! Thanks for sharing your journey!
Found you on in-courage. Love the blog. Very inspiring. Hoping mine can be as good as yours one day soon!
I found your blog via one I receive updates from, “Holy Experience.” I loved reading about you and your most current blog from Guatemala. Take care and get home safely and I’ll be back to read further.
Had popped in sporadically in the past. Stalking… umm… following you daily in Guatemala w/ the Compassion group.
Blessings on the journey~
I found your blog months ago but must not have bookmarked it. And, now I found it again through (in)courage, LPM, and your trip to Guatemala.
Living in Marysville, WA via Indiana, Illinois, Idaho, Wyoming, Michigan — some more than once. My life has criss-crossed this country, but home is where I land…which is Washington for now!
Glad to have found your blog again!
Mesa, AZ
Sawubona! I just found your blog via Angie Smith’s Bring the Rain blog. I am definately bookmarking it and when I get time would love to read past posts.
I am from and live in Northwestern Ohio so the Michigan/Indiana link caught my eye too.
I was in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa in 2002 for 8 months so the South African part of your blog definately caught my attention. BEAUTIFUL country! BEAUTIFUL people! I also learned to dance to Zulu music and could do a pretty good knee raised stomp!
Glad to have found your blog!
I’m de-lurking long enough to leave my ‘stamp’ all the way from the little southern state of Mississippi.
Hi Lisa-Jo,
Delurknig from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Sent by Bev at funnytheworld.com. My father is South African and so it’s wonderful to hear a voice from South Africa now living in the US. Thanks for taking us along on your travels!
Hi from Kelso, WA, I found your site from a link on Compassion International’s post on facebook
Im very glad I did and I plan on reading more from you. Thank you for doing what I wish I could be doing, and I want to be more involved in what really matters. Thank you so much for sharing
I found your blog from aholyexperience. Thank you for taking “us” to Guatemala. I am now sponsoring two children. Your Saturday the 11th post was particularly ……. moving/inspiring/heartbreaking/uplifting/HOPEFUL !
Hi Lisa-Jo
I couldn’t be happier to have found your blog. Feels a little like home to me, in fact … I was born and raised in South Africa, moved to Asia for several years and now I live in Canada. I, too, find myself in-between places, raising three little ones and living across many cultures, with friendships and loved ones in so many places. Sometimes I don’t think my heart can grow any bigger and then God adds another place and more people. I love the adventure.
I was already reading Ann’s, Amanda’s, Lindsey’s, and Shaun’s blog before the Guatemala trip, and now I have your delightful one on my reader too. And, after reading what each of you wrote, our first sponsored child, Joselin from Guatemala (chosen because our daughter Jocelyn liked the name). Thank you.
Yowzers, it’s typo-land above. “blog” should be “blogs,” and it should say “And, after reading what each of you wrote, we are now sponsoring our first child, Joselin from Guatemala.” The dangers of commenting with little ones underfoot, huh?
So glad you could understand my meaning despite the typos.
Hi. I just wanted to thank you for your post on writing to sponsored children. I have been a sponsor of 2 little girls since the Kenya blogging trip and have not written yet. This was enough to give me the push I need. Instead of worrying that I won’t say the right thing (or worse yet, the wrong thing) I will just tell them how happy their letters make me and how honored I am to be their sponsor. I keep thinking I need to say something profound and that stalls me. Instead I now realize that just regular everday conversation is enough and God will lead the rest.
Thanks so much for your words!
Kris
Hi Lisa-Jo! Congratulations on the precious baby snuggled in your womb. I snuck over here from Twitter to see what all the congratulations were about…nosy, huh?
Your writing is so beautiful..as if God Himself is guiding your fingers across the keyboard. Reminds me of my friend Laura’s writing over at the Wellblog.
Thank you for sharing your heart and your unique take on life! Blessings from a Louisiana girl transplanted in Arizona, LeeBird
Oh, my, you do have a lot of stamps now. I think I’ll add mine as well! I’m from Nebraska, born here, moved around here, still here! I’ve been all over the US but never out of its borders. I would love to go someday. I love the music that comes out of South Africa! Funny thing to pick, I know.
Cheers to your stamp from the Great Plains of NEBRASKA!
Love your site. I’ve only been following for a few weeks, since your trip to Guatemala. I grew up in Michigan, and still think of it as home. I now live in Ohio with my husband and our three daughters.
hi Lisa-Jo
i’m katie. love reading your blog. it’s so amazing, especially all your posts about your trip to guatemala. i’m kind of from all over, but right now i’m in maryland, usa. anyhow, just wanted to drop by and leave you a stamp. cheers!

Let’s see if that works…
Hey! Officially un-lurking
Came across your blog while reading LeAnna’s Twitter, which I came across via another blog which I found from… Hm I lost my trail
LOVE your blog!
Well I have been reading for about a month so I thought I would un-lurk
) I love coming here because of the beautiful way you express your heart. You words challenge me and make me think too…I love those types of blogs!
So here is your stamp from a place called Talking Rock a little town in Georgia
Hi Lisa-Jo,
I’ve enjoyed perusing through your blog!! I love finding others who have lived and traveled all over! My family just recently moved to Madrid, Spain from Prague, CZ where we lived for 9 years. Such a beautiful city and I miss it in many ways. We lived in Russia before that, but US is home to us.
I love your map! I need to get me one of those!! =)
I’m a newbie here! I have just discovered you and am so glad I have, I am constantly looking on how to improve my relationship with my daughter and parent in a peacefilled way, Love reading the blogs as it helps me to understand thoughts and feelings!
Keep it up and thank you xx
I forgot to put that I live in England in the UK
With Love from Cheri and her son Quentin. Whom I will always always listen to what he has to say.
Lisa-Jo,
I’m a stranger to you who was introduced to your blog by a friend via Facebook and for the first time in my life (despite lots of lurking) I feel compelled to post a comment on someone’s blog. Because so many of your posts moved me. I am a South African mother of a 3 year old boy and so much of what you say really resonated with me. And helped remind me of the love, joy and faith that my parents raised me with. I have sent links of my favourite posts to my Mom and Dad, who sadly live across the world in New Zealand. But for the time that I visited your little space on the internet, it felt like they sat right next to me reminiscing about the wonderful childhood that they provided in a little corner of this wonderful country. So thank you, for opening that connection just a little wider by being willing to share of yourself and this wonderful journey of motherhood and parenting that we are on. I think its very safe to say that you are definitely “telling the truth, and going where you are needed”.
I found your blog via a Compassion Twitter posting about the importance of writing sponsor children. (At least I think that was the round about way I found my way over here!) I really enjoyed reading about your experience on your Compassion Guatemala trip earlier this year. I have been contemplating visiting my Compassion sponsor child, Adela, who is also in Guatemala next July/August. It was wonderful to read about your journey – I too have been totally enlightened about the need to write often. I used to keep a friends/family/ramblings blog at http://www.traipsingthroughtivoli.blogspot.com (which you can visit to get a feel for who I am), but mainly now keep to book blogging at http://www.tabithasreads.blogspot.com. You’re in my Google Reader so I’ll stop by often now! I’m a mother of two daughters, wife of an associate pastor (counseling/discipleship) and I work part-time as a marketing manager. We live in Sheboygan, WI…right about this time of year I now wish I lived in the south!
Thanks for this blog – it’s a wonderful spot to stop by each day!
Cheers!
Tabitha
Hi there – just discovered your blog and am looking forward to getting to “know you” through it. I really appreciated your post on calling evil “evil.” Good stuff. Here’s my “stamp.”
God Bless,
Beth Stone
Hm… didn’t work the first time. I’ll try again…
Hi, I just discovered your blog! This is a great idea since I often wonder who my blog visitors are. The posts about your marriage are lovely and inspiring.
God bless,
Sarah
Love to de-lurk — and I love coming here!
Hey Lisa-Jo
I was introduced to your blog through a colleague and, having moved to Pta recently, I think I find myself at your old church, 3ci
Loving this blog… you encourage and inspire a somewhat timid heart to live more courageously on a daily basis.
Muchos gracias. xxx
Hi Lisa-Jo,
I’m a regular reader of Kellys Korner blog and I stumbled on your blog from her site. I sat here and cried as I read your blog this afternoon. You are a beautiful writer. I know God sent me to read your blog today. I have 3 beautiful boys James 10, Patrick 7 and Ryan 2yrs old. I lost my mom 18 years ago this coming April. To hear you write about your mom really touched my soul. I sobbed because my feelings are the same as yours. I also just miscarried a baby at 4 months last week and I would have loved to have had my mom to lean on but I know she was helping from above. I will be a regular follower of yours and I’m looking forward to more of your wonderful writing and the birth of your baby girl.
Thanks so much,
Maureen from Long Island New York
Hey! A friend sent me your link when you wrote “We never need to feel lost in Translation”. Great post! Well written and very much like how I felt when I moved here to Ukraine almost 16 years ago! My family and I live in the far East of Ukraine, in a city of over a million people, called Donetsk. (where the current president is from and, by the way, we can see his roof from our balcony) (not that we live in such a nice place as he does, but we live just over the wall of his compound in a “normal” neighborhood across the road)
I enjoyed reading and will come back and look at more of your posts!
God bless!
Here is a stamp from south central PA!
I am so grateful for your depth of thought and love for Jesus, your family and His world! I have been reading your blog for about 6 months. I am a mother of a 2 and 3 year old (and hopefully more) and enjoy reading your mothering struggles and passions. I can relate. I also can relate to wanting to use my mind and energies for my family and His kingdom. Thank you for your encouragement and vulnerability! I am in Memphis, TN transplanted from PA and NY… long and grace-filled story of why and how! Blessings and thank you, Mackenzi
Hi
A stamp from Sandton, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa…now residing in Warwick, Warwickshire, United Kingdom.
Love your blog
Visitor in Texas, really enjoyed the posts about your boys, I have two myself.
Hi, I happen to stumble upon here from some other blog and your blog title immediately caught my attention as I have always thought of my own family (of origin) as ‘gypsy-like’. I come from a family of missionaries on my mom’s side, and my mom married an Italian man, so my sister, brother and I are bi-lingual, third culture kids. I grew up in Italy but married (after my freshman year of college!) an American, so I have been living in the states since, with two pre-school kids and one coming. I shared a link to your blog with my mom and sister, as I know they two will understand the pull and ‘home-sickness’ for your various homes around the globe. I miss Italy very much, though I know right now I am where I need to be. We might not be living our missionary adventure we used to think we would but it is an adventure nonetheless! And life is missions, no matter where you are!
hi! my name is kellie. i came across you via jenny at the southern institute. i’ve really been enjoying your posts!
Hi. Not actually sure how I discovered your blog, but I really like it. I am from somerset West, South Africa. Looking forward to exploring more of your blog.
Love your style of writing. I am now following you and doing the friday five minutes.
sent your way by dear hilary s. i look forward to following you here from essex, ma. your words are full of life, truth and hope. thanks lisa-jo.
I just stumbled across your website/blog via a friend’s blogger site. I am looking forward to reading your posts. God Bless!
Hi! I found you via a friend’s twitter post. Love what I’ve read so far. You are a world traveler!!! Looking forward to reading more from you! Blessings!!
Officially de-lurked,
J
Hi Lisa Jo,
I have been following the InCourage blog for a while now and kept coming across your picture on the site. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had seen you before. I finally went to your blog and started reading your bio….from South Africa, father’s a doc, college at a small, Christian liberal arts school, and other details….you are Joshua’s sister! Joshua was my husband’s roommate at college and the bestman in our wedding. We have gotten follow ups on you and your family from him through the years and so all the pieces started to fit together! I am so glad I found you, your blog is wonderfully written and so relatable! I added you to my Google reader and can’t wait to read more. I have started blogging more intentionally recently and would love for you to stop by. And tell Joshua hello next time you speak to him and that we can’t wait to see him in April!
Blessings,
Jane
Stopped by and love what I see here. I will be back again. If you want to stop over and say hello I am at http://www.avgordsuprgddss.com
I have you as one of my fb pages but have never introduced myself. I live in the US but was born in N.Ireland
I also have 2 boys
Will definitely be hanging out here more, I just did my first ever five mionute Friday challenge and loved it!
I have found your blog from time to time…and today I’m realizing that we have quite a few commonalities (difference too though!)…
but I wouldn’t know about that.
I had my first, a daughter, 2 years ago at the beginning of April (though I was due in March), you will love it! (though it willl be indecribably hard at times too! [My mom was/is not able to be part of it either.]) I guess in that way it will be similar to having boys
I’m very excited to learn you are living in the DC area – we are too! Boy, does this area have its challenges and benefits, or what?!
I have lived overseas as well (though not with my husband), including in the former Soviet Union, and done some traveling (how much depends on what you compare it to!)…
I love the 5 minute Friday thing…I don’t have a blog but have been wanting to write and journal more, and I think this is a great way to get some of those “juices” flowing. Anyway, you will be in my prayers during this very special time!! And I will be following more often too!
I’ve been reading your lovely, thoughtful blog for several months now and have subscribed to it by email. LOVE these 5 minute Friday challenges. At my advanced age, just newly in retirement from 17 years of ministry as a staff pastor, it is good to have a challenge to write something! Many blessings as you await babe #3. I also had 3 – 2 girls first (each of whom now has 3 boys, the eldest 20 and the youngest 5) and then we had a boy (who, of course, has 2 girls, a five year old and our newest, turning one TODAY.) We currently live in Santa Barbara CA and are both native Californians, but spent the first two years of our married life in Zambia, teaching school and loving it. Had our first baby girl there in 1968. Oh goodness, that is a long time ago! Thanks for your thoughtful writing.
I know that I have introduced myself before and told you what an impact your words have had on me, but I feel the need to tell you again how inspiring and uplifting I find your blog. Reading what you have written makes me realise that there is a joyous, wonderful woman and mother inside of me. I just need to let her out into the light a little more often and stop allowing myself to be bogged down in the everyday things that try to keep me from my connection to grace. Thank you.
I just found you today, and I am so glad I did. I think it was Twitter, but it was also most likely somehow linked to the massive and beautiful One Thousand Gifts community.
May you be blessed, dearest. I will be back!
I enjoyed reading your Tiger Mama story! I plan to come back to read more. Have a wonderful week!
Your sis in Christ,
Suz
Hi there! I truly enjoyed reading your Tiger Mama post.
Great blog you have here! Keep up the great work! Feel free to drop by my blogs too: http://www.trulyrichmom.com and http://www.teachermamatina.blogspot.com
God bless always!
Just discovered your blog via Ann Voskamp’s blog. Happy to have found you.
So excited to have found your blog via Ann Voskamp today. I’m a former globetrotter myself: started out in a small village on the Mosel river in Germany, headed on down to Mogadishu, Somalia for over 5 years (when it was still rather calm and raw beauty), back to Germany, on over to France as an exchange student when I was 17 and miraculously met Jesus in a dingy bathroom, returned to a shell-shocked family in Germany, took a one-year break in Bavaria (southern Germany), returned to Africa (Guinea) and met my first husband on my 20th birthday, followed him to The Hague, Netherlands and finally here to the US. I’ve been here 20 years now. God put me here and I couldn’t be happier but I’ll gladly pack up and go again if He calls me someplace else. Blessings to you!
I just now found your blog through the 5 Minute Friday on someone else’s blog. It looks like a fun exercise and I’ve bookmarked you:) Beautiful blog!
Un-lurking to thank you for writing and sharing your journey. I too am a sort of gypsy, though at times feel more like a hobo… from Kansas, to Chicago, to my mom’s house, to Ireland, back to Missouri, and hopefully back to Ireland again. But just in case, reading about your year of No…
Oh, and thank you for 5 Minute Fridays. It helps with the writers’ block.
Hi There- I found your blog from another blogger who started the 5 minute Fridays! I appreciate your posts and perspective. I am currently living in Guatemala and feel some of the cross-cultural, where is home, kinda of feelings. Have you been back here since your September trip? Look forward to following your blog.
Just stumbled over from another blog – love it! I’m a transplant too, 3,500 miles from my hometown in Alaska. First time mom, navigating this season on my own, love to read real stories from other moms.
I discovered your site a few weeks ago and I keep finding myself returning to read a little more here and there. Thanks for sharing your journey and experiences in such an interesting and amusing way.
I’ve been reading your blog for a few weeks only but so far I like what I’ve read. You are a source of inspiration. I will be following via FB.
I follow you on twitter but I don’t get to read here everyday. I had to retweet the comment, “I’m cranky and in love with my kids at the same time.” I’m a single mom to one adopted son and one foster daughter that I hope to adopt this year, ages 1 1/2 and 2 1/2. I work full time and I’m just finishing up my masters degree this semester. I’m cranky on my good days but oh how I love my babies! My favorite part of that post was, “I trust in the gift of tomorrow. And the Father who gives it.” Every night when I go to bed I beat myself up with the could of, should of, would of’s and then I tell myself I will do better tomorrow. So thankful for that gift!
Thank you for sharing! I will be back often!
Blessings,
Cathy
Found your blog through a friend’s blog: Love it!
I’ve added you to my GR.
What a beautiful way to help others start their day, end their day, or just stop over for a visit. This journey of life is wonderful when there are people like you to help me along the way. Thank you for allowing me to share in your journey!
Peace to you. (And congratulations on the little one! So exciting!)
Just popped in here through someone else’s Five Minute Friday. I think I am hooked.
What a clever way to really get to know who your readers are! I was born in SA, raised in Norway, moved back to SA as a young woman and moved back and forth and around and about quit a few times. My eldest son is born in SA, no 2 is born in Norway and little English rose is well… born in England. My husband is from Cape Town but we live in Norway now. Love your blog!
My daughter, with an 18 month old precious son, sent me to your site today- I’d never been here before. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful words with me. They resonated with both me and my daughter, and I realized that we now share the mystery of the birth experience. Funny I never put that into words before… we share the mystery of birth.
And once again, we are all truly dazzled by the gift God gives us.
Stamping your “passport” from over at WhimsySmitten.blogspot.com. Glad to have found your site, and what a beautiful little precious bundle you have. Congratulations. <3
i don’t know how to stamp and i don’t blog, i just read. so stamping with words is just a comment and where i am? apache junction, arizona.
found you via holley’s blog.
I found your blog via incourage, and I enjoy reading about your everyday adventures.
Though I was born in Scotland, I grew up as a Missionary Kid in Colombia, S.A. so we had our share of travelling back and forth. My family and I are now living in Denver, CO, where I’m pursuing an elusive MDiv degree.
Just found your blog from a shared post on facebook…LOVE your views on motherhood and can’t wait to officially follow you!
Thanks for being so honest!
I am a happy resident of rural Iowa, a teacher, and a mom of four. I just read your blog for the first time. I am a regular reader of Ann Voskamp’s blog and you were listed as a must read on her site.
Anyway, I like what I read today! I will certainly be visiting again. Thank you for your words.
Hello from Bermuda! Just found your blog through Ann Voskamp! You have a lovely blog and your writing is so engaging! I will be back to visit!
I just stumbled upon your site today and I absolutely love it…you speak the words that are in my heart
I am an American mother of 2 expecting number 3 this November, living in a village in Azerbaijan with husband, kids, and occasionally my sanity.
Thank you for your posts…as I lay here reading them I feel encouraged for the first time in months. Enjoy your new sweet baby, sister!
A big hello from Tennessee! I found you recently through my Aunt’s 5-minute Friday posts and I love your blog, I can’t wait to keep reading
Just wanted to “un-lurk” myself and wish you hello from under the blue skies of Ohio.
Hi! I’m from Oregon in the States, and I’ve only read a few entries of yours but I am rather fond of you already. Thanks for sharing your life and your heart here!
An introduction: I live in a small town in Ontario, Canada. I became a writer when I found Christ in 2001. I just finished a book called A Better Way. It is a fiction book based on Mary and Martha. I will be showing it to publishers at Write!Canada this year. I did the illustrations in watercolour. I love meeting new people and finding this blog has been excellent. Blessings,
Jan
I connected through a friend’s Five Minue Friday. You are great. I will be adding you to my blogs that I follow.
Hi,
I love your blog (found it at a friend’s blog)! My hubby and I are fellow nomads;) We’re not sure where we’re from, but it makes life interesting! Like you, we’ve been all over the globe.
Thank you for your beautiful posts.
Melanie
Nice to meet you!
It was great to meet you at Bull Run park today. We had a great time, and we are not too far from eachother so if you want to go to a park nearby, please let me know.
Your blog is so interesting and beautiful. I’m a subscriber now.

My name is Jamerrill Stewart! I just found your 5-minute Fridays and think I will be “visiting” more on those days to link up. I have two websites, http://www.HolySpiritLedHomeschooling.net and http://www.whollyinadequate.net
Besides that, busy homeschooling momma of five that is desperately trying to get my chickens to stay in their pen and my old farmhouse painted.
Be blessed!
Love your posts! Thanks for the inspiration you give me. =)
Love your posts! Thanks for the inspiration you give me as I’m such a newbie at this blogging deal. =)
Your blog is unique. A friend told me about it.
I am a homeschool mama of four. Once upon a time, I traveled abroad. Now my children beg me to show them the souveniors that I keep in my china cabinet.
I dream of taking a trip with Samaritan’s Purse to pass out Christmas Shoe boxes.
Looking forward to getting to know you better!
God bless!
I’m late to everything…even your blog, just found it today and your candor warmed my heart. I’m a Seattle girl living in Los Angeles, crazy about my husband, attempting to release two boys as {good} men into the world, and serving a big God in little ways. Glad I found you! Keep inspiring!
I love your blog…love your musings on raising boys. I have very adventurous 8 yr old twin boys…loved today’s post, “yeah, I’m ‘that’ kind of mama” because I am too…not sure their hair ever gets brushed except when their grandmother goes at it with water and a brush. I love the following by Robert Frost, “When I see birches bend to left and right…I like to think some boy’s been swinging in them.” We spend the summers on the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country where the boys’ bath is swimming in the river. During the school year, we live in Colorado where running outside and rolling in the snow giggling and naked is a sport:) Thanks for reminding me of the fun in it all!
found your blog through CRAVINGS (Carey Bailey). . .LOVE IT!
i’m an Oklahoma girl, born and bred. wife to a great okie guy. mom to almost 5 yr old sweetheart of a boy and almost 2 yr old heartbreaker of a girl.
I know I have said it before but I just love your blog!
Peaceful Wishes,
Melissa
I just wanted to say that I love your blog and enjoy reading it. I like to participate on your five minute Fridays. You have brought out some things in me that I didn’t even know about. Thank you!
I stumbled across your blog while surfing one day. The Five Minute Friday idea stuck with me. I just posted my first one this evening. I also took a leap out of my comfort zone and linked up to your Friday post. One day soon, I will read all of your previous posts and get to know you, virtually anyways. Take care!
Stumbled across your blog via a ‘Five-minute Friday’ that I followed from ‘The Johnsons in China’, which I found during a Google search for blogs by expats.
My husband and I – Americans – grew up in Europe and Asia with brief sojourns in the US in between. We have managed to stay in the US for the first 19 years of our marriage, but we are now headed to Seoul in June with our two teenage sons, and while they are experienced at moving from state to state, this will be their first international move. I’ve enjoyed reading your posts and have added you to my Google Reader.
I’m ‘stamping’ from San Antonio, Texas, but will be reading from Seoul, South Korea, in about 5 weeks!
Just came across your blog today via a Facebook friend. Wonderful to read your heart. I’m a mom of 4, also working full time in international development
Living in the Catskill Mountains of NY now.
Neat idea! I subscribe so I read all your posts and have been very inspired. I’m an expat Mama too, living in China (blogging about it at http://www.mamawit.com), and I also have a double name
(Lori Ann)
You said we could share our blog badges but not sure how the html works? Here’s an attempt:
…afraid that’ll look dumb but I hope you can strip it if so
Keep up your writings to inspire all us Mama readers!
Heloo (should I say howdy?) from Houston, TX! I found your site while reading someone else’s five-minute Friday post. I love the idea, and I’ve bookmared your site so I can come back and participate. Thanks!
Hi Lisa-Jo!
I have just read the whole “No” series because we’ve been living that for the past 10 years, off and on, and I’m totally worn out with it right now. Thanks for the encouragement! BTW…we have 2 boys and then the girl, too. I love boys but am truly surprised by how much I love having my girl! Thanks from Chicago.
Love your blogs! Where were you 16 years ago when I started mothering? Oh, yeah…too young!
I’ve stumbled on your blog from time to time, but today I was really blessed by one of your posts on marriage. I can’t wait to read more of your writing!! Happy Tuesday from Arkansas!
Dear Lisa-Jo,
I discovered your blog through (in)courage about three months ago, and I am so grateful for the love that pours out through you when I read your words. I found your post that you wrote two years ago, I think — the letter to your mom — through reading your Mother’s Day post the other day. So, so beautiful. She must have been absolutely stunning. I love that you have this page, for your readers to introduce ourselves. So warm and loving. Thank you so much. Also, I am so thankful to have been granted the “newbie” scholarship to Relevant in October. So grateful and so excited!
Blessings to you and your family. I pray your return to work is filled with His peace and covering,
Jennifer
This is such a good idea! I love signing those books at historic sites….
I made my way here through reading other blogger’s that I read doing 5 min Fri. Love it! I’ve been so encouraged and blessed by so many of christian mommy bloggers, it’s become my village in a somewhat hostile real environment.
Thank you!
Just got a link to your blog from someone I worked with in Africa. Can definitely resonate with the whole concept of gypsy lifestyle, parenting, multi-continental living, etc. Look forward to more of your posts. No blog yet…. maybe one day.
Well, now I feel like a creeper for lurking. Hopefully this will purge me of the feeling.

I am born and raised in Halifax, West Yorkshire, UK. I escaped to University across the Yorkshire / Lancashire border for three years where I met my husband. Some how we ended up returning to ‘The Fax’ where we have built our eccentric life together. I have, after 4 painful years of trying, a new six week old daughter. Katharine Lorelai is my latest adventure, noisy as she is.
It has always been my dream to write and be read but, to put it bluntly, I have always been too chicken to follow said dream. Katharine has given me a new confidence – I figure if I can squeeze out a human being, I can get my act together and get on with some prose.
Lisa-Jo I love your blog and envisage that I will return often. xx
I found you starting at Elizabeth Esther & Joy in the Journey….I enjoy reading blogs about modern women traversing the issues of family and faith.
Im rarely sheepish, but I avoid conversations about world traveling, as (except for a trip to Hawaii) I have never left North America and have many times had travelers speak to me as if I were a blithering fool for not doing as they did (as if my priorities were misguided) but I need to put those bad experiences in the past and be happy that others have had experiences that were fulfilling to them. Its also time to open a new chapter…after 30 years of wanting to go to France…I have decided that I will be in Paris in June of 2012 to avoid a family gathering where I know pain would be inflicted on me were I to attend. Phooey on that, Im not submitting to it.
We live in the very outer reaches of the DC commuting area where Im trying to finish raising my kids which is turning out harder than I expected. My first to launch was on his way to completing a university education when a severe clinical depression decimated him and took everything he ever was with it. After a year of trying to fix him Im realizing that I am called to love him, not fix him. His broken self moved back home with his beloved and a new baby. Parenting a mentally struggling child with a baby is stretching me tremendously.
My day job is Perinatal Bereavement nursing where I care for women and families experiencing pregnancy loss and infant death. God uses my work to sharpen me even though it sometimes feels like Im getting pummeled with boulders. It is a great blessing to me.
Some days I think I have “high stress” down to a science but despite the challenges, I am (maybe oddly) a very happy person.
I just arrived here from a friend who sent me your most recent post about how motherhood shouldn’t be graded on a curve. I can’t wait to read more and add you to my reader to see what else you write about!
Happy Thursday!
I’m new to your site. My daughter is an avid follower and Five Minute Friday-er. Her posts have intrigued me to search you out and read up.
I’m impressed. So, I thought I’d better “un-lurk” and make it official.
I look forward to reading more and possibly participating in your Five Minute Fridays.
Be Blessed
Kim
Hi, I’m visiting for the first time today and enjoying your blog. I’ll be back.
Hi… I live in Iraq right now, although I’m originally from the Pacific Northwest. I’ve enjoyed reading your blog. I appreciate your five-minute-Fridays, which I think about even though I don’t always get to the writing. Blessings and thanks.
Colleen
First time visitor.
Thank you for your beautiful blog! Will definitely be back.
Thank you for your post ‘Seventeen Years’. I came across your blog today for the first time and was very touched by that post. I too lost my mom in my late teens and am now raising two boys and a little girl. I also can say that it is well with my soul… but that little ache is always there, isn’t it? I will be checking back – keep writing from your heart and sharing your faith. It is encouraging!
Hey there! I’m so excited to be reading your blog! I stumbled upon it one day while surfing mama-blogs and I’m happy to say I’ll be coming back often and have already subscribed to the RSS feed. Like you, I’ve traveled a lot in my life, mostly on missions trips and also some study & personal trips. God has been a large part of each trip and He’s taught me so much through the different cultures & people I’ve met along the way! I’m very encouraged here at your blog through your honest and humble posts that point to Christ. You have a beautiful way with words and I’m inspired! I recently advertised your blog through my own blog too.
Some of the places I’ve been: all around Canada & America, Mexico, Argentina, Scotland, England, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria. I’ve often thought of myself as a “Jesus Gypsy”! Wanting to take the love of Jesus all over the world wherever God leads me. I would love to have you come on over to my blog and have a visit!
I’m originally Canadian eh?! I married an amazing godly American guy and we now live in the Pacific Northwest and have 2 kiddos with hopefully more on the way soon!
Blessings, your new blogging friend
I just came across your blog ‘by accident’ and I love it! I love your title! I love your theme! I LOVE that you are SouthAfrican! (Most days I believe I was born in the wrong place!) Looking forward to reading more! (oh dear . . . I see now that I also have an obnoxiously addictive affinity towards exclamation points.)
I’m un-lurking simply because of that cute little “un-lurk” button on top. That is a genius idea.
I’m 17 and from Colorado and I found your blog through stalking Ashleigh Baker on Twitter (I can’t actually follow her because I don’t have a twitter myself
. Looking forward to reading all of your archives haha! Lord bless you! And you can find more about me by looking at MY about page on my photo blog (www.photographybysm.blogspot.com)
I found my way to your site by way of The Nester (The Reluctant Renter – I’m one of those, too)…and, I now believe, by way of God. I have spent the last hour reading many of your posts…with tears streaming down my cheeks. We couldn’t have more different backgrounds and life experiences. And, yet, reading your words I feel as if they’re based on my own life. You have spoken to some of my greatest fears, failures…and said “it’s ok.” You are blessed with the ability to write…and to touch others with your words. Thank you. You can add another new regular reader (from southwestern Virginia) to your list / blog passport!
It’s one of those days where we have a busy afternoon planned, so of course, the baby is choosing to sleep in and throw off our routine. And mercy, during this unexpected free time, I’ve somehow landed on your blog while wasting time on the computer and sipping Diet Pepsi before 9am. It has tugged at my heartstrings and touched me in a way I can not describe. I am glad to have found it, but rather peeved that the time I saved by waking up early to put on makeup is now a total wash, since I not have mascara streaks running down my cheeks from crying while reading some of your work (good tears– meaningful tears). But it was worth it. It was so worth it. Your writing is wonderful. I can’t wait to explore your site more.
I happened onto your site at just the right time. I was feeling really overwhelmed by motherhood and happened to read some of your post at just the right time. Thank you so much for the reminder that motherhood is a struggle for everyone but can also be so beautiful.
Kara
I love your blog. I came to it only a short time ago to participate in 5 Minute Friday…which I think is absolutely wonderful. Since then I follow you on facebook and I love reading your posts. They make me happy. I love this idea.
I went to ONU with Pete, am also an ASP alum (Fall ’95), and was part of the Hyde Park Vineyard when you guys were there. Great stuff!
I had to come visit because I kept reading so many wonderful five-minute Friday posts! Love what you’ve got going here, Lisa-Jo… Beautiful look, beautiful writing, beautiful blog! I look forward to reading more.
Hello. I recently found your blog as I followed some rabbit trail. I have found myself revisiting it over the past few weeks. I too love to travel, read and write and have a heart for world missions. I live in Texas with my husband and three kids, whom I currently stay home to raise. I am an English teacher by trade and have been able to travel around the country and the world teaching. I look forward to reading more of your fabulous writings
Hello! After hearing about you for so long on Gitzengirl, I thought I´d check you out! So glad I did – I´ll be back! Originally from Iowa (US), I live in Spain and can find myself nodding along to many of your comments about life, kids, travel, and the joy of it all! Jill
I absolutely LOVE your blog. You are a terrific writer and I appreciate your honesty. Thanks for sharing a piece of you with us! I have two girls, the first of which was born in the UK while we were there. Now living life in another foreign country — the Northeast US (for a Southerner, it qualifies!).
I’m from Memphis. Love your blog – sort of like mine. I write mostly about the chaos and cherished moments of motherhood—and how they grow up so fast. I’ll be a follower!
Hey there! I am de-lurking on your blog! Hope you’re day is WONDERFUL!
xoxo
I just realized I spelled, your wrong…….grrrr. I promise my grammar, punctuation and spelling are much better than the above mentioned post….blah!
your words are like a healing balm, much needed. i am grateful.
You’re so much like my mom, which means I like you even if I don’t know you lol…. she said the same thing about stamps and passports that you said
and… I love your website’s design a lot too… God bless you gypsy mama
I’ve only started recently reading your blog and I have NO idea how I came across it! In my heart I truly believe that it was completely one of “those God things,” because so many of your posts encourage me, motivate me or help me to refocus. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and heart with me.
HEllo……from Brazil…enjoying ur blog….
God bless…
Beca
Hi there! Happy Friday!
I ended up on your blog after clicking one of those “Five-Minute Friday” links from Belle Squeaks (bellesqueaks.wordpress.com)’s blog. I’ve just started following her blog, and I’ll be sure to follow yours too! I LOVE your “About Me” page! And I just read your “Welcome” post. Thanks to you, I now have all the warm-fuzzies again with feelings of when I returned back to my country for a visit eight months ago (after 16 years!!!)…and yes, with toddler in tow.
Also thanks to you, I am now inspired to 1) recall and write about said time being back in my Motherland; and 2) take the “Five-Minute Friday” challenge. You see, I’m an infrequent (rather new) blogger. I’m a New Mamma with our first (and only) boy (so far)…and life is just getting started on my end of the globe (in sunny Mesa, Arizona) in terms of motherhood, blogging, and everything in between!
I am happy to have come across your page…and look forward to reading more posts about your adventures.
your five minute friday prompts are yielding some of my best writing and giving my the courage to call myself a poet. thank you, friend. i’m looking forward to seeing you at Relevant.
(hoping that html “stamp” works!)
I enjoy your blog. I especially loved the post today that said there is hard and desperate but there is also beauty and joy, need reminding of that sometimes! I’m from Australia, a home schooling mum of 3, follower of Christ and I love reading the honest journeys of other women!
Carolyn
Thank you so much for blogging and sharing your life! God bless!
I don’t have a blog badge…’though I’d like to. So far I’m too much of a perfectionist to buckle down and try to make one.
Anywho, I’ve done a 5-minute here and there, courtesy of my friend (and your follower) Heatherly, and I’ve enjoyed them. Cushions to the wind! Might just link up to do some more.
I admire your ability to share so much of your heart on your site. I interview folks, hope to travel more often for stories, and share stories and hints on simple, green living for real people.
Found you while surfing through some other blogs I follow-have enjoyed yours so much. Your baby girl will give you so much of everything-mine is now 15 and oh, how the time has flown! Oh, those boys will be amazing as well. I have a 12 year old who is my heart.
Just found your blog via twitter RT on your Five Minute Friday post about Loss. I’ve already written a lot about loss the last two months on my blog so I’m looking forward to your next post! I’m going to make it a Friday ritual. I’ve enjoyed looking around your blog and can’t wait to become a regular reader. I’ve done a fair bit of traveling and living elsewhere myself. I grew up in Michigan and have some extended family in the Owasso area! My husband, son and I just relocated to Toronto, after two years in Cairo. My husband is Australian and our son was born in London, lucky to hold both British and American passports! I bet we could swap stories! For now I’ll enjoy reading your beautiful words.
Hello! I’ve been so enjoying your blog lately. Thanks for a picture into your world!
Thank you!!! Just found your blog — your writing is wonderful, esp. the “year of no” posts.
Thanks for your post on saying goodbyes. Well said. Marcy Pusey sent me your way. Hope your arrival in the US of A is a safe one.
Best Wishes from Germany!
Found you from a Five Minute Friday post. Your site looks interesting and I plan to follow along for a while.
I’m not even sure how I “found your blog”… but it appeals to me on so many levels and has become one of my daily visits. You’re in a folder I have labeled as “Favorite Blogs”. I’ve been to South Africa and felt right at home with the dear people I spent time with. I cannot imagine living as you live — so far from there and those you love. I’m in awe of you in that respect. You have a strength and conviction that helps you tremendously. That much is obvious. And you are a wonderful writer!
been around a while and just LOVE to read your stuff. I don’t have a blog of my own so I often feel weird commenting on others’. Know that I am regularly blessed by your writings.
hi there,
I live in Caliente, NV (pop. 1142 includes kids & dogs).
I grew up in Las Vegas, NV and married in 1978. Moved away to “rural Nevada” where time stands almost as still as the hot desert air.
Raised 4 children. Had the first 2 the easy way. (married their dad) Then prayed for a miracle and was blessed with 2 boys. (labor).
I love my God, I love to write, and I want to write about Him in my life.
It has been a joy to find your messages of encouragement.
I share some of them with the young teenage girls I work with at my job.
(A State correctional facility for juvenile offenders)
I hope to be a writer someday when I grow up. (I will be 55 on my birthday Aug. 10)
Thank you for being real and honest. I used to think if I did everything “right”, as a parent, my kids would turn out without any serious “problems”. Not true.
But my God is bigger than jobless husbands, wayward sons and other trials. His promises cover all his chil’ens challenges. Yes indeed.
Great to know you Gypsy mama.
Luv,
Rhonde-vous
I just happened to find your blog today & love it! I am intrigued by the idea of travel, living in far away lands, and discovering the gems of other cultures. I aspire to have a passport full of memories one day too. I am absolutely a gypsy at heart, but circumstances & finances haven’t afforded me the privilege of seeing my heart’s desired sights just yet. One day though…
Thanks for sharing your story.
Found your blog today and am always interested to read South African bloggers, especially those living overseas, and moms – even more!
I’m South African too, and my husband and I live and work with a Christian organisation overseas. We have a three-year-old daughter – a real joy!
I haven’t read much here yet, but have really enjoyed the bit I’ve seen. I’ll keep popping in here for sure!
I just found your blog today through Holy Experience and I am already hooked. I am a mom of 3 and your entry about the mom and one year old on the flight you were on helped me to see my mommy-ness through fresh eyes… I am an artist! Thank you. I will keep coming back to see your story unfold
Inspired by your “beautiful” words! Thank you!
So I tried to leave my blog badge but not sure what happened! Loved the post about beauty. That little thatched hut was lovely, and so are you.
I am so grateful to have found your voice in the midst of all the voices out there. You are the first blog that I religously read and subscribe to. I love your mother voice filtered through your beautiful way of reflecting on life. Although I have very few readers of my own blog and use it more as a journal, one of my hopes is that this year I will spend more time writing.
I am a Kansas Prairie Girl who made New York City my home for 12 years and then convinced my New Yorker husband and my little NYC boy to pack a truck and plant ourselves in Kansas. I miss the city and the energy of just being alive there…but I am also a fan of insanely beautiful skies that only Kansas can offer.
Be well. Keep writing. You are a gift.
Jen
Hi, I just found you today. I honestly don’t remember how I ended up here but I’ve been reading post after post and crying. I don’t know what it is, your writing, your story, your unflagging faith… but something touched a cord within me. You’re the first blogger who’s so openly Christian that doesn’t make me want to run screaming away. You seem so authentic, so truly, internally Christian, like it’s who you are and not an outfit you wear.
I’m not sure I’m making any sense, but as someone who’s constantly, possibly futilely searching for faith, your words give me hope. so thank you.
Hi,
I am visiting from Calgary, Alberta, Canada…a transplanted Nova Scotia girl.
I just found your blog today and wrote my first Five Minute Friday Post!
I stumbled here somehow and found a refreshing, encouraging heart… a kindred spirit!
Blessings on you and your household as you share and honor God. ..as you make His name great!
Thanks for your words about your mom. I too lost my mom as a teenager. She passed away from a massive heartache a week before my 17th birthday. I also reflected on the day that I had lived longer without my mother than with her in my life. I was blessed to have some wonderful women in my life at the time that gave me some love and direction at a time when I felt like life would be unlivable. Thanks for sharing your story and life with others.
I live in Pismo Beach, CA with my husband and two kids (boy and girl). I have also wondered about how to raise my daughter so that she has amazing self esteem and knowledge that she can be everything she desires. I want to teach her that Gods love is more precious than any guy. I want her to be confident in who she is and not look for love and acceptance from a guy. I made some bad choices as an adult because I was looking for love in the wrong place. I want her to be an amazing wife and mother and pray that she will have enough self confidence to obtain that without making some of the wrong choices that her mom did. I have a wonderful life but sure wish I could change a few really bad choices (don’t we all?).
Thanks for your words. Blessings to you and your family!!
Hi! I don’t remember how I came across your blog, but I remember why I clicked the link–because of your clearly awesome name
I’m definitely a reader of yours now! Thanks for sharing your life and faith so beautifully.
I’m an Army wife with wanderlust, hence double-gypsy, (wait, I’m an Army brat too, so is that triple-gypsy?) currently in Okinawa, Japan.
Hi! I read Ashely Mays’ blog and she does five minute Fridays so your name has cropped up several times, but I haven’t actually checked you out untill today, and have spent the entire afternoon reading your lovely writing
and there’s still more to read
I, as a full time reader, am loving this. Your posts are lovely and thought provoking, and I completely identify with your one post about how books reveal a little more of the ultimate story. I’ve always felt that, but I wasn’t sure how to put it into words. I’m probably one of your youngest readers(do any high schoolers even read blogs??) I’m going to be a high school junior in a few weeks and your series about beauty couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve always been a little self conscious and sometimes I just get sick of my own mind and wonder what on earth God’s up to. That feeling has only increased when I think about future careers and plans and colleges that I have no idea about. I feel like my faith is about to be tested and that makes me nervous.
I’ll be around
On a lighter note, thanks so much for this blog and allowing me to ramble and cry and think through life with you
On a lighter note, thanks so much for this blog and allowing me to ramble and cry and think through life with you
This is my first visit to your blog and I really enjoyed it. I am looking forward to 5-Minute Friday. I am sorry that I discovered you on a Saturday!
I leave in Austin, Texas, have been married for 25 years, have two wonderful daughters and two precious grandchildren. I teach a 5 year-old “Bridge to Kinder” class and my husband and I train churches to offer special needs ministry. I am currently working on getting two books published.
I look forward to getting to know you through your blog.
Blessings-
Deana
I came across your blog by a link from a link of a link (usually how I find the good ones
). I can’t wait to start 5 minutes Fridays. Your one on beauty made me cry. Your words are beautiful…thank you for the encouragement.
Hi!
I found your blog via Beauty for Ashes with MK Tyson. Love the 5 minute Friday’s idea. Look forward to reading more of your posts!
Steph
i’ve lurked over and over.
i’ve read 5 minute fridays that cover my blog’s subscriptions.
and now i’m joining. i’m de-lurking.
i’m loving.
Saw your blog for the first time on a friend’s fb page today. Just in the last few minutes I’ve been able to relate to so many things you’ve posted. I’ll be back!
I came, I read and I lurked!
Hi, Lisa-Jo! I’ve been a lurker for a long time, but I’m stepping out into the light today!
I am so touched by your love for your family, your Savior, and your homeland of South Africa. I cry more reading your blog than anywhere else (that’s a good thing, by the way). Somehow you always manage to shine His light on a dark corner of my heart that needs attention. Your stories and writing prompts have challenged me to dig deeper into the gift I’m just now courageous enough to begin unwrapping.
Thank you for transparently sharing your heart and effervescently spreading His love. You are a blessing.
Your sister in Christ,
Jana
I subscribed to your blog about a month ago and I have been so blessed. Some might think it strange to have one so young following their blog, but I too, am so encouraged by your every post. We teens need to dwell in the beauty, the real, true beauty that can only come from inside, just as much as the older women. If every girl could read a blog like yours and be effected by it the way I am, the world would be a different place.
Don’t stop!
In HIM,
LindseyMarie
Hi Lisa-Jo! I just discovered you, your blog and in(courage) community a little while ago. I think all three are fabulous! I’m a fan! Thanks for the invitation to de-lurk! God bless you, your family, your ministry and your heart. Hugs!
Thank you for your post about being in the Ukraine…I just recently moved to Germany and am feeling quite similar…
Hi, Michelle visiting from New Smyrna Beach, FL, a Mainer by birth I’ve settled in FL for the past 10 years- not sure how I found you but today’s my first visit!
Un-lurking!
Stacy from Alabama.
Never lived more than 10 miles from where I was born, nor have I wanted to do so, but am intrigued by your gypsy life.
Hi Lisa! I’m unlurking. I’ve been participating in the past few Five Minute Fridays, but that’s about the only time I show my face. I would love to let you have my blog badge for your “blog passport” but I don’t know how to paste it into the comments section. Thank you so much for fostering community for us – especially with the “no edit” posts. That really takes the pressure off.
Hi! I’ve seen links to your website from several others, and just popped by to check this out. Love it. So… here I am un-lurking. : ) ~De
Hi Lisa-Jo. My name is Jane. I’m a wife to Andy and mom to 4 kids ages 8, 6, and 3 year old twins. I came to know about you this past year through reading Sara’s blog and seeing the 5 minute Friday posts. I’ve decided that I’m done peeking around so many great blogs and getting so much encouragement from so many people without speaking up and giving some back
I don’t have a blog, but I’m working on it. So, thank you for sharing yourself with us on here and for your heartfelt posts. It is so refreshing to read the words that I feel myself from someone else’s journey through this life.
Hi Lisa Jo,
I found you on twitter (which I love) and headed over here! I love that you are from South Africa because we have some dear family friends who are also from South Africa and I love to listen to them talk and hear about their life there before they moved over here. (that might be a run on sentence) I am married to D., and a mom to my son Aubrey, 7, and my daughter Mallory, 4. Although being a wife and a mom is hard work, it is really what I always wanted to be. I have a blog, but I’m not very good at keeping up with it! I am trying to get better though. I can’t wait to read more from you and about you and your family!
Hello! I just came across you thru ColoradoLady’s blog. You have a new follower from western North Dakota!
I’m a former children’s librarian, a pastor’s wife, and mom to two children, a daughter (2) and a son (9 months). I live in Ohio and I thoroughly enjoy your blog as it is very encouraging to me!
So here I am un-lurking. I wanted to take a moment to say hello, and to thank you for filling me up with your words, your honesty, your gratitude, your simplicity, and your awesome love of God (and your family). I stumbled upon you blog, how I don’t know. I just ended up here one day a couple of weeks ago, and since that moment I have spent probably far too much time reading, and re-reading. At times I feel like you have written words right off my heart, and at others times your writings offer me a fresh perspective, a new viewpoint and just another way of thinking. Life as a mom, wife, sister, friend, woman is an amazing journey and I am so grateful that there are others willing to share the truths of their own lives. I am just slowly starting into the blog world and can only hope that someday my words will touch others the way yours touch me.
Hi there!
I have also read you over at InCourage and just think you are the bee’s knees. I love your blog and continue to come back because of our similarities of living and raising kids internationally, and moving…again and again. I find encouragement in your words and don’t feel quite so crazy living as a gypsy myself. I will be at Relevant 11 and can not wait to meet you in person!
I’m officially un-lurking. I have been visiting for a while, mostly following links to your blog via twitter, while locked in my bathroom and squinting on my iphone
I just discovered your blog a few weeks ago when a friend shared a link on facebook. I read that post and it really resonated with me. I started reading old posts and have added you to my google reader. I can’t tell you how amazing God’s timing is. I just had my second daughter a month ago. Mothering a two year old and a newborn is more than I can handle some days. Reading your thoughts has really encouraged me and helped me realize I am not the only one who feels this way at times.
Hey Lisa-Jo! Though I do not always comment, I am one of your very regular readers and facebook followers. Not sure why I have never checked this page out? So here I am!
Your ministry is such a blessing and encouragement to me. Thank you for all you do dear bloggy friend!
I just found your blog thru my niece-in-law that participates in your Five Minute Friday. I love the idea so will try to pop in and participate.
Gypsy Mama,
I am Gretchen! A new wife (2 1/2 years) and a new mommy (17 months)! I LOVE reading your blogs, And I read them often! They give me so much HOPE! I love how you are so honest, yet so full of grace when you talk about life… It is refreshing! Thank you for posting! I am a semi-new blogger..but a loyal blog follower!
thanks so much and God bless you on your precious journey!
Just came across your blog, and I’m adding it to my favorites so I can stop by again. I’m a wife of a campus minister, a mom of three girls, a lecturer of writing and public speaking at a large university, and a blogger at Pink Dryer Lint.
I really look forward to reading more from you, Lisa-Jo. I can sense your heart, gentleness, and humor through your words.
Hey! I LOVE the 5 minute friday and I think I will join this coming friday if I remember! What a cool idea.
I am a missionary in Costa Rica and love taking care of my family, writing, reading, movies, nature, and above all… Jesus. Loved your 5-min. Beyond!
I’ll be back.
just found your web site and had fun reading your post. I am almost due for my 6th baby and have been feeling restless and crabby, its nice to know I am not the only one. I have been reading to many home decorating blogs and feeling that i can’t keep up with them, so your blog has been a breath of fresh air. Now I need to get up and off the computer to feel better… I also love to travel, I would love to take the kids over seas, maybe someday. For now, they just love to go visit our families.
Okay… I’m un-lurking. I live in Illinois, married for 26 years and have two boys, 21 and 16. I have been reading your blog for a while, can’t really remember when I started. I love your posts and usually pass them along to others I think will enjoy them, too.
I just found your blog a couple of weeks ago and love your 5-minute Fridays. I also love this wonderful way of meeting your readers and connecting with people. I have been trying to think of a way to create more of a community and connect with people and I think this is a wonderful way to do that!
Blessings,
Megan
So I’ve been lurking for a while. I live in Oregon, I have the Google reader on my smart phone and often read your posts while pumping at work. I’m a first time mommy to a now 5 1/2 month old little boy, after 5 years of infertility. My son is a testament of faith and I feel he has drawn me that much closer to God. I had not planned on working full time but due to my husband’s job loss have been struggling through leaving my kiddo behind to work.
I find your posts so encouraging and usually the breath of fresh air I need. I try to blog, but must admit I’ve not gotten very far. I love 5 minute Friday and hope to do one soon.
Thanks for shining your light for others to see and encouraging the mommies out there.
I’ve been enjoying your blog for the past week. I’m a Canadian living and working in Thailand. After 37 years as a single I married a Lao man and now at 38 I’m a first time Mom to a beautiful little girl. My life is much more complicated than I ever intended, but it’s good. It has been a blessing to read the words of someone who knows what it’s like to appreciate the place where you live and yet still long for home.
Hello Lisa-Jo!
My name is Rebecca and I live in Tasmania, Australia. A dear friend told me about your blog; and well, your words – they bless! I have recently discovered (in)courage, too.
I’m oh-so-blessed to be married to my best friend, and to be Mummy to 8 precious ones ages 15 years – 6 months.
Lisa-Jo~ How have I not stamped your page for so long? I’ve been following your blog for a while now, many many months… you already know my love of your Five Minute Friday Meme, and my appreciation of you as a Mom, who writes about motherhood so beautifully and powerfully… you’re a blessing and I am always thrilled to read your blessed words. Thank you for sharing your heart!
So glad to have met you in person!!! Unlurking online now. And I love your heart insight into the world of social media and all things blogging. What a gift YOU are!
I stumbled on your blog this morning and what a blessing to read your words. I look forward to going back and reading more.
Hi there! I stumbled upon your blog through the (in)courage website. I love your blog! It’s so colorful and full of “exotic” life. I look forward to following your blog! Thanks for sharing!
My blog is sethamy95.blogspot.com . Visit anytime you like and feel free to comment. I welcome any constructive criticism as well
~Amy
Sweet Lisa-Jo,
I’ve been reading you for some time and have commented occasionally. I love your honesty and just wish I lived in your neighborhood so I could come and rock the baby and play with the boys to give you a break on occasion. Some lovely people did the same for me when my children were small and I love paying that forward. {I try not to drop names, but TeriLynneU is my niece and we have talked about you}
Bless you, darlin!
Mollianne
I have really enjoyed your posts about the real life challenges of motherhood. I think I ran across your blog linked from mutheringheights. I have a sink with unwashed dishes and a 2.5 yo boy that runs around in his underpants as well.
I would love to travel more and am considering homeschooling. Thanks for all the writing that you do!
Hello! Stumbled across your blog tonight from someone’s fb post….LOVE your writing, LOVE your way of communicating Truth….I’ll be back! Blessings!!
Around our house we speak of “honey-words”. ( Proverbs 16:24 )
This sweet space drips gracious & golden.
Thank you for refreshing my soul.
Hi, I’m from Mission, BC, Canada and thoroughly enjoy reading your blog. Numerous times I am in tears for it gives me the freedom to be me (accept me the way I am), teaches me to grow in trusting friends and encourages me as a mom who often feels like she’s failing. You speak the truth to my heart. Thank you.
A friend shared your “fine” post on Facebook and I followed it here. I’m so glad I did.
I am a mother of 4 (ranging from 9-2) living in Surrey, England. We are about 45 min outside of London & have lived here for about 4 months. Previously we have lived in Illinois, Indiana, Georgia, Colorado & Pennsylvania.
I love it here but obviously with most international moves you have high’s & low’s. I found your blog through a friend on facebook right after we moved & have been reading almost daily since then. And am so thankful for that!
I absolutely adore your blog. Mainly because it reveals truth, pulls at my heart & is REAL!! You have such an eloquent way of putting into words the very thoughts that go through my head daily. Thank you for taking the time to share them with us & bless us continuously. Your blog is truly a treasure from the Lord.
Love your writing! I have followed (In)Courage for a while and have enjoyed it so much. My family is from Oklahoma but I was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Colombia, S. America as an MK. I married a Venezuelan and we have served as missionaries in both Venezuela and Mexico, with our sending church being in Arkansas. We are currently living and serving in Puebla and are loving it here! We have four children ages 10, 8, 7, and 4 and I relate to your comment about rather eating glass than having kids and yet they have been nothing but a blessing to me in my life; they are truly God’s gifts to me. God bless!
I have been reading for quite a while and am not at all sure how I found your blog. Whatever the route, I am sure there was some Divine intervention involved. I have frequently come to your blog and found that you have put into words something I have been feeling but unable to express. At other times your posts have offered words of wisdom that at times inspire, at times comfort, and at times convict. I often think that I would just love to sit and have a cup of tea with you. Thank you.
I currently live in Northern Viriginia and have four boys 6, 5, 2, and 11 months. I have lived all over the US and a total of three years in France. My husband is from Chad and I have been blessed to have been able to travel there twice to meet my in-laws (and hope for many more trips in the future).
I’ve been reading for a couple of weeks, and am so grateful to Diana Trautwein for pointing me your way during our prayer time at Bible study together. Wow! You get it! And are able to use “it” to point us to Jesus and his Spirit. Which is what I actually need even more than a clean house and some peace and quiet (no matter how I feel about that at any given moment).
I’m a generations-deep Southerner recently transplanted to California, and we have four children–daughter 8, sons 6 and 4, and our sweet baby girl who was (almost) last year’s Christmas present. It’s been fun to find out from my husband that he and Peter were in the same program at ND at the same time…such a small world. Except for when family’s so far away. I know.
I’m looking forward to staying tuned and learning and being stretched. Thanks.
Hi Lisa-Jo. I’ve been meaning to “un-lurk” for a while now… I came across Five Minute Friday thanks to MarieHarmony and have been participating ever since. I set a goal for myself to get back to my poetry and started my blog to do that. You have given me the weekly prompt to help me keep my promise to myself and I cannot thank you enough for that. I thank you too for sharing your story and insights and for introducing me to so many beautiful souls… I live in the US — Allentown, Pennsylvania and, although Greg and I are not married in law, after 13 years together through struggles and his continued illness, it is fair to say we are committed for life (anam cara, if you will). We have a white 6-year-old miniature schnauzer named Milo who is our four-legged furry son and one of the great blessings in our lives. Thanks again for the sharing and the connections.
Hi! I just read the truth about fine will set you free. I cried. I’m starving for these words you wrote. I have 5 kids and look forward to looking around your blog some more!
Again, as a world traveling missionary, I so love your site and appreciate your calling and giftings. God bless you my sister
Grateful
Stasia
Just taking a peek at your blog and wanted to say “Hi!” keep writing!
Hello! I’m a facebook follower and enjoy your statuses very much! I admire world travelers like you – probably because I haven’t stepped outside the U.S. I’m interested – though anxious – about joining your “Five Minute Friday”. I’m an editor guru so to write without correcting mistakes clearly strikes against my comfort zone, but I’m up for the challenge! I look forward to returning often. Blessings!
Hello! You have had quite the journey…and it seems to suit you well. Glad I stopped by and looking forward to a Five Minute Friday. Oh, and when you are done with the media manager gig and/or the community manager gig…can I take your place?!
Hi, I just found you today and I’m following you on FB. I appreciated reading about your social media posts and I am right there with ya! I started my blogging ministry in March of this year, not because I am a writer but because God has called me to write to His daughters regardless of how I feel. The blogging community can be so overwhelming and discouraging at times as we lay our hearts and scars out for all to see. Sharing our struggles to encourage another all for His glory is the purpose that always needs to be at the forefront of our minds. I LOVE the relationship aspect that you wrote about. I am a shy, reserved type and I am learning to come out of my shell as the Lord leads me. Thanks sister!
From the mountains of southwest Virginia, but we’ve hit KY, LA, NC, OH, CT, Chicago twice and now we’re back in VA in the DC area. We have a 3 yo son that we adopted at 9 months from Las Vegas – not everything that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! I’ve seen your name for a while and finally had a chance to stop by. I’ll be seeing you much more often now. Nice to meet you! Loved today’s post so much I had to share it, twice.
I’ve come to your site a few times through friends who participate in Five Minute Friday, but I’ve never wandered around like I did today. I just read your about page and got really excited when I saw you’d lived in Michigan. And then I got doubly excited when I found out you’d lived in Owosso! Two of my cousins married girls from there and are raising their families there. I wonder if Owosso is small enough that you would know them at all. My cousins are VanPoppelens and their wives’ maiden names are Nequist and Lawrence.
I just found your blog today through the in-courage Facebook page. After reading all the comments, I obviously need to check out 5 minute Fridays.
I live in the center of Kansas after being transplanted from upstate NY, after marrying my guy 44 years ago. I’ve only traveled from the East to West coasts of the US. And only because I was forced!
My daughter and grandson live in San Fran. My parents and siblings live in the East.
Love your blog.
Keep on keeping on
I found your wonderful blog and it filled my heart with such peace. Thank you for expressing feelings through words that are heaven sent. I hope to be able to contribute more soon.
I’m a follower of Christ living in San Diego, California.
love > fear
Thank you for your honesty and story. I can relate on many levels to your story about the year God said no. We were missionaries in Europe and expected to be there for a very long time…then God brought us home. Broken and bleeding, after only 6 years. It was one of the most painful experiences of my life. And now…after almost 7 years of being back, healing and waiting, a new season is upon me. It is beautiful and joyful. God is faithful, and I loved the reminder in your story, that His plan is for His best, and ultimately for mine. Thank you so much. Blessings to you as you continue on your journey.
I’ve just read through your posts on the year of “No” and your words spoke — and speak — deeply to where I am. Thank you so much for sharing.
Grace & peace,
Ashley
Hi Lisa-Jo, my name is Amy and I have been reading (and blessed by) your blog for the past year. I can’t remember exactly how I found you, but I know Ann Voskamp and (in)courage had something to do with it. I adore your way with words and the fact that you often say the things that are on the tip of my tongue or at the front of my mind. There have been several times when I have been struggling with my blog – whether anyone even cared that I write it – when I have read your encouragement to just keep writing because we’re doing it for us and God. Period. So I’ve pushed on and written for me and God and in doing so figured a lot of things out. I cried with joy at the birth of your daughter (which sounds a little creepy and stalker-ish since we’ve never met, but trust me it was honest emotion for another mother with two boys who is blessed with a daughter third), and when you had to leave home (South Africa) after your last visit. And it occurs to me now how rambling this is, but I guess the bottom line is this: thank you for using your God-given gift with words to be a blessing to others. You certainly have encouraged and blessed me! Smiles -
I happened upon your website as a link from Ann Voskamp. I am mother of 3 and recently a grandmother. Quite old in experiences and as a corporate wife have done more than my share of moving and uprooting. At times, I feel so wise and experienced but other times I see the world thru someone new and realize I have so much more to give to our world and to share. As a nurse, I nurture and give hands on love but the past 8 years God has nurtured me and shown up thru 8 deaths of family members. Never have I felt closer to Him and more motivated to shine my light and spread His love.
my first visit to your place… i found you someplace i can’t remember (sigh) and am intrigued by my peek into your world! i visited south africa on a mission trip in april of 2001. we built 2 steel structures for two congregations there north of petersburg. i live in northwest washington and have traveled a lot with my hubby on short-term mission trips, all the while thinking i would one day be a full-time missionary, raising my kids on a mission field somewhere. now they are all grown and we are still “just traveling”… but loving it very much!! thanks for the peek into your world. i will keep checking in…
OHMYGOODNESS! I didn’t realize what a Pandora’s Box I opened when I clicked on the link to your blog from a ‘new friend’s’ post! What a lot of things I’ll have to return to read and enjoy! ‘My world’ has become very small in recent years and this looks to be a Lovely Community to move into – Thank You for Sharing this all –
Blessings for 2012 –
Lynden –
http://aneleganttouch-lynden.blogspot.com – is my blog that I’ve recently begun.
As mother of four and grandmother of five, I live in a different era, and my focus is both broader and more detailed than it was when I was a young mother. I blog about art, gardening, squirrels, pizza, constitutional government, sunflowers, butterflies, poetry and societal decay. I would be happy if my Magnifying Glass (the name of the blog) could help younger women see some of the things I find important, amazing and inspiring.
Thank you for writing down your heart. Mine echoes its concern over my seventeen year old boy… Today I’m starting a ten day “Daniel Fast” to pray specifically for him in many areas. Your statement “I begin to exercise my motherhood again” is ringing true of me as well. Last year was a year of shock and grief, and it seemed I was beginning to curl up into a ball of hopelessness and fear. The Lord began to heal my heart, reignite my faith, and spark my hope throughout the fall. Reading The Circle Maker this month, I am realizing how much of my motherhood I was not exercising–especially in prayer. It was a confirmation to “find” and read this blog today. Thank you, new friend!
I love reading everything you write and especially seeing the pictures of your children. They are precious. I have written you once before but wanted to tell you again how much I look forward to your column. I am a grandmother from Tennessee. Your writings bring back some wonderful memories. I don’t envy today’s moms and dads. It’s a much different world today than when I was rearing my children. Many blessings to all of you out there. You have the most difficult and important job in the world.
I’ve had you on my google reader for over a year now and have probably never commented, but love reading your every post.
Let’s try that again…somehow my last comment posted before I could finish. I am a Pastor’s wife from Raleigh, NC. We have 3 sweet little girls aged 2, 5, and 7 and I am homeschooling the oldest two for now. I do have a blog, but it has not been updated in nearly a year and it’s purpose is mainly to share pictures with all of our family who live far away. My husband’s parents are in Guam, so I can identify with you in that your family is so far away. We only get to see them about once every two years.
My favorite post of yours so far has been, “In the season of rain, pray for rain.”
Hope that makes me a friend and not a lurker. =)
My name is Tammy and I don’t even know how I stumbled upon you, but I committed to doing the Five Minute Friday writing challenge, posted only my second one last Friday. It’s helping me stay focused on just writing bits at a time with no pressure. One of my hopes for this year was to write more and do more art. Born and raised in Philadelphia, still a hardcore East Coaster currently exiled in Chicago with my husband, Mike and daughter, Phoenix. I’m a Christian still trying to find myself at home in the church, trying to make sense of a life that just keeps going wrong, trying to build community into family.
oh Love this! Love your 5 Minute Friday posts and link up…. they are like a salve to the start of my weekend. LOVE YOU GIRL!
Traci @ Ordinary Inspirations
I came across your site via Coffee Girls blogger. I love the Friday Five. I was actually looking for a theme for todays blog. We live in Utah just outside of Salt Lake City. Have a blessed Friday
Vivid to me means the clean white snow that fell during the night. It also is the clean white sand that I will see every day for the next month as I have the opportunity to live very close to the ocean. It will also be the sunsets that are magnificent over the ocean every evening…the glorious handiwork of God. It is easy to see life as a fuzzy kind of overview….we need to really check carefully to see the vivid details that we can over look. This morning it was the red cardinal that stood out among the sparrows eating at the feeder. The vivid yellows of the promise of spring.
I have popped in and out of your blog, first seeing it through my friend Jana @ Grace For My Mess, and every time I drop by, I am blessed. Thanks for the treasure trove of words that you share … I look forward to “de-lurking” and visiting with you more.
Now perhaps I shall finally go about that 5 Minute Friday idea that attracts me so – even though it’s Saturday!
Dionna at Code Name: Mama encouraged me to come through her Sunday Surf… I read And then after 18 years I rediscovered my mom. Lovely post; to the heart. Thank you for sharing yourself here. It’s lovely to meet you.
So, I have already un-lurked here and you were beyond gracious with your response. But sometimes you just have to visit again to let someone know that something they said (or in this case wrote) made an immediate difference in a wonderful way. I think I told you before that I especially appreciated your encouragement to just keep writing. Even when your efforts seem so small. Your post earlier this week, about when your blog or your life feels small could not have come at a better time. I was feeling as though my well of words that never seems to empty was finally running dry. And I can’t even articulate how scary that was for me. Your post inspired and encouraged me to try it again. Today I wrote something that, for once, seemed just right. It was the first time the words bled onto the page both from the deepest recesses and in the most rhythmic rivulets. And, although I know this may be the height of presumption, I wanted to say thank you and to share the results of your encouragement. So, here’s the post: http://sunshinesentiments.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-laundry-says-i-love-you.html. And here’s the heart felt – the thank you from one small mom who finally feels like she said it right.
Smiling -
Amy
hi have lurked for quite some time! Used to have my own blog and have joined in your five minute fridays, which I LOVED…..however I quit the blog as I am a homeschooling mama to 8 and time is precious. I follow you on twitter and am just about to join your site here so your posts come directly to my inbox. Bless you xo
forgot to say – we live in little old New Zealand!
Hello
I picked up your blog when I googedhomesick South Africa because that is how I am feeling at the momet after nearly six years in theUK without one visit home. All of a sudden I feel homesick to my very soul and you have inspired me to start planning a trip home.
Thank you for sharing your experiences
I came across your 5 minute friday (i can’t remember how) But i love the idea and joined in this past week. I am a casual blogger with so many ideas and so little time so I am not very consistent. I have two boys (11 yrs and 9 months), I work part-time as a social worker. I look forward to reading your blog
(i like smiley faces)
i LOVE that you have a de lurk page … hi …i’m elizabeth … nice to read you ….
Found your blog through someone else’s! The post on it doesn’t matter who’s reading because of who it is that’s writing your story touched my heart. Thanks! Subscribing now…
Hmm, I think we’ve interacted a few times over at the (in)rl pages, but not here.
I read every one of your posts, but don’t usually comment (although I did tonight). I’ve followed you since before the (in)courage days; watching that ministry blossom has been a delight!
I did the Five Minute Friday thing for awhile, then for various reasons — most of which you mentioned in today’s post, in fact — I stopped. My words weren’t pretty enough. My writing was too rough. My story gets old after awhile. And let’s be honest: sometimes the soul-searching that those short five minutes bring about is more than a bit uncomfortable.
But I’m back.
I’d really like to make it a habit this time, simply because that in and of itself is a very important process to me. So here goes nothing!
Just found your site and your posts are so raw and real, I just love it. God leads us to soul sisters and I just found another one. Blessings ~
hi! i followed dawn from ‘it just dawned on me’ over here to see what the five minute friday is. maybe next friday i can do one too.
i spent the last 21 years in oklahoma, but am now finally back in the pacific northwest (oh thank God!) where i belong. i grew up here, gave my life to the Lord here, and simply love it here.
k?
Hi! I just found your blog from Must Love God. I was born and raised in the Midwest, traveled around the U.S. on vacations as a kid, did brief mission work in both Mexico and Puerto Rico in my younger days, and in South Dakota recently. My former husband was in the military, which took us to both Hawaii and Maine. I am now back in the midwest, just moving again away (only 3 hours, but sometimes it feels like a world) away from “home”.
I stumbled upon your blog from Ann Voskamp’s…I wish I had more time to read now, but I will have to bookmark you and come back later. I pray later comes soon. Your most recent post (about love being patient and kind) was handed to me, no doubt, by the Holy Spirit Himself. Thank you for showing me that I am not the only one who struggles with this. And thank you for reminding me that I am LEARNING everyday…not just failing everyday. So thankful to have found your blog.
Hi
Found you on Ann Voskamp’s blog. Living with my feet in Canada and my heart in Africa, like you. Grew up on a farm in the Kalahari, Northen Cape. Two girls, 7 and 9. All of our family back in SA. Lots of good friends here but no one that understands how your eyes long to slide over wide open African skies and you think you can hear sonbesies sing. Particularly homesick tonight.
Can’t remember where I discovered Gypsy Mama, but have followed since Nov. or Dec.
I love 5 minute Friday! Always so challenging. As a mull-er, i.e.; needs to mull awhile before committing pen to paper, it is a crazy five minutes for me.
So envy the gift the Lord gave to you, enabling your travelling. But who knows? Maybe my day will come too, and if not that’s ok if that’s God’s will.
I am at a transition time in my life. My youngest turns 18 in May and will be off to college. My homeschooling days will be over, my three young adult older kids are all at home at the moment but are on the brink of their own transitions too.
I don’t know what’s next, the future looks both scary and exciting. And that’s why I started blogging last June. I’m just starting to find my direction. What a crazy thing the 21st century is!
I love this idea of a place for people to leave their mark on your blog. I’m gonna have to steal that =) I just found you via the Five Minute Fridays linkup and I’m inspired to join! I’m bookmarking your blog and plan to explore some more.
Loving the Five Minute Fridays! Subscribed to your blog so it’s easier to read in my mail. Lurking is not an intentional disguise, it is a matter of time. The time to read all the phenomenal blogs, and then to comment on each one? Not happening. But know you are loved and appreciated – you and all the gals at (in)courage. Thanks for your friendships.
A friend posted your 100 Ways to Encourage a New Mom, and, as I’m bringing a meal to a first-time-mom friend tomorrow (personally expecting my third in a month), I thought I’d check it out. I ended up following through at least a dozen pages of your blog and tearing up at quite a few of them, and then saw your “Un-lurk” link and felt obligated to post. Now I think I’ll go make a batch of cookies to go along with that dinner so she has that midnight snack.
Love the idea behind your blog. Love it. Found you through someone else via the Blissdom you summarized your blog. I love people who empower! You go! Hope to meet you at Blissdom 2012!
Absolutely LOVE your blog! So inspiring, especially to me, a very young, married mother of a 2 year old boy! I cant wait to continue to read updates about what God has done in your life and hope that maybe it will continue to inspire me to see how I can shine the light of God into others lives. It’s been a very scary road for me and a lot of things have happened but its so wonderful to see that yes, there is hope!

My cousin just shared you “100 Ways to Encourage a New Mom” … as a new mom I think it is fabulous .. and I wish so many of my friends and family had seen this 8 months ago!! hahah =) Thank you for sharing – can’t wait to browse your blog and catch up on old posts =)
Just found your blog and truly love all of your inspirational posts.
A friend posted your “100 Ways to Encourage a New Mom” on Facebook and I had to read it, even though my youngest is now 3. So True! With other similarities based on your bio, I felt compelled to continue looking at your blog. Just sent the “Things I’m Not Good At is Only Half of the Story” article to another mommy friend. I just had to subscribe because I’m limited on time to read more at this moment. But I really look forward to what you have to share in the future.
I have so enjoyed joining your blog updates. I, too, have an international marriage, a kiddo and God-given passions beyond that…for sharing hope thru worldwide missions, for welcoming in the outsider (especially international outsiders), for writing, for thinking well. I don’t know how to make a blog or a button, so I’ll stick with regular email and facebook until I have time to get more Internet hip.
Thanks for your recent 100 ways to love anew mom…perfect to print out for my sister-in-laws baby shower for her third who is joining a five year oldbrotherand a two year old sister…the sleep deprived years continue!
my cousin just shared 100 ways to encourage a new mom on facebook. I was so impressed. my kids are 13 years and older, but I can say, any and all of those are great gifts to give a new mom . God bless you
Loved the “100 ways to encourage a new mom”, it seems we have about 100 friends having babies, and it is great to have some new and easy pampering ideas!
Thank you so much for sharing your life! The more I read the more healing I find for myself. I’m humbled and blessed by your words.
Hiya Gypsy Mama! I read your 100 Ways to Encourage a New Mom and it brought tears to my eyes! Must be the hormones from recently having my little boy ;D I just wanted to say that it really touched a part of my heart when I read it. It made me feel validated for feeling and experiencing all this new mommy stuff. So thanks!
I discovered the “100 Tips…” on Pinterest and it was one of the few pins I actually took the time to click through and I’m so glad I did! I absolutely LOVE the post. It really spoke to everything I felt and experienced in the days weeks and months after my daughter was born. I want to print it out and mail it to my firends whenever they have a baby! I’d also love to share a few of my faves from the list along w/ a backlink to the full post on my blog. I’m a maternity, birth & newborn photographer and I think this would be so cool to share w/ my clients…. thanks for the great post. I’ll definitely be a returning visitor, loving many of your other posts as well.
Dear Lisa-Jo,
I’ve just read a number of posts in your “no” series. I don’t know what attracted me to word “no”, as I’m a pretty positive person…but was curious.
There’s such a lovely power and humility in your words and great truths. The book, “Where is God When it Hurts,” by Philip Yancey came to mind as I read your words. I don’t know if you’ve ever read that book; most of his books are wonderful.
Thanks you for sharing your thoughts. And thank you for founding gypsymama which I look forward to every Friday.
If you’re ever in New York, I’d love to buy you a cup of coffee. And don’t say “no.”
Blessings, Mary
I ran across one of your posts on FB. I just want to thank you for the way you inspire and confirm others. The timing is perfect and meant a great deal to me. Prayerfully yours, Kim/Petey
Been lurking but too afraid to post – I have suffered a baby loss. I don’t like to bring people down – but your site is a great place for the future
Dear Angie, You are NOT bringing anyone down. It is through our own pain, loss and suffering that we can encourage one another. You are not alone dear one, and I pray that you will know the peace from Jesus that will heal your loss, and know that there will be a day you will see you baby. We had our daughter killed in a car accident at the age of 7. So thankful that we can and choose to trust the Master who is in control. Blessings to you dear one.
I just stumbled across your blog and it brought tears to my eyes. I get frustrated and confused by all the “enjoy every moment” comments of being a new mom, and I so appreciate the honesty you share. You manage to do it gracefully without being negative nor rose-colored, but real. -Baylie in Cheyenne, WY; mom to 4-month-old girl
Dear Bailey, Bless your heart. You are, my dear in the hardest part of adjusting to motherhood. The age of your precious girl sucks the life out of you, but this too shall pass. My daughter has our grand-daughter that is 6 months old and many states away. It is hard for you all who are in the season on “new motherhood” but remember, this is a season, and season’s pass. Hang in there kiddo.
Amen to everything Kelly said – you are in the thick of the hardest part and this makes you brave and worthy of a super hero cape. It gets better. And more deliciously wonderful. I promise!
Thanks to both of you so much for your kind words. Inadvertently, I think I was a little overly negative. Funny how that happens through a computer screen. I really do love being a mommy, but I swore that I’d never tell another new mom to “enjoy every moment.” There are moments so hard that I wonder if I’ll survive to the next moment. Then the next moment is so happy that I wonder how I could ever have been so upset. I think the Internet is especially full of an idea that new moms will enjoy every second, and I think that expectation sets us up for disappointment. So I appreciate anyone that shares the honest, nitty, gritty, beautiful truth of mommyhood.
I just read through 100 Ways to Encourage a New Mom and my eyes are wet. I have four beautiful children (who thinks theirs aren’t beautiful anyway?!) all born with different first-year experiences. Many of the things on this list were checked off unknowingly by family and friends and many more could have been. I now have a few friends with brand new babies, some firsts, some seconds, and you can bet I’ve printed the list and am initialing as I go down the list to provide support for them! It takes a village to raise a momma. Thank YOU for taking the time to write these down and share with us. I’m writing to you from Waverley, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Hi Lisa-Jo,
Very encouraged and blessed by your blog.
Clever thoughts
We are from the lovely hills of West Virginia!
I like the idea of “un-lurking”/”de-lurking” so here I am, a not-so-Jersey girl living in a small town in the Garden State, the halfway point between NYC and Philly.
The (in)courage website led me to your blog a year or so ago when I was living in the SF Bay Area.
Love your blog- keep on writing!
Erika
I *needed* your post “The hard work of liking our kids, not just loving them”.
Raising a son – is hands down the hardest thing I have done yet.
Again, Thank you for taking the time, and gracing that shared experience with elegant words to help open my heart and mind – if only one – it was worth it.
Hello. I was brought to your blog by your “100 ways to encourage a new mom”. I am currently pregnant with my first, so I am soaking up every bit of information I can. I’m from Indiana
First time visitor but I am a lurker of other blogs and this is a great idea!
I connected to your blog through 1000 gifts. I love to be reminded of what is important and connect with women who are real and deal with the short comings we have as mothers. I am a new mother late in life, 10 years into marriage. The first years were hard. I lost my mother as a young woman. I thought I would never be blessed with a child. It has been joyous and hard to find encouragement. God’s perfect timing has answered my prayers. HE is good ALL the Time! Thank you for your words.
Just wanted to de-lurk… although I am trying to cut down on my computer time so (sadly) I don’t know that I’ll be back. Can’t even remember how I got here but I’ve been trolling around being inspired for about an hour now. Thanks for your blog and your kind words to new moms! I have an almost two year old and am 22 weeks along with number two. I’m sure that God is doing a great work in my life, and wants to continue, but most days I don’t feel like I know what it is or why it seems so much smaller than the work He is doing in others’ lives. (Which I know is not true, and is a silly way to look at things, but oftentimes perception equals reality.) I loved your post on the things we’re good at vs the things we aren’t… how often I focus on the things I’m not good at, but there are many things I do well! Thanks for the reminder, and the encouragement. God bless you!
Yeah! What an awesome list that I will share with my mamas (I am a doula) and friends!
Lisa-Jo! I’m a reader! I so looks forward to every new post. Thanks for being so vulnerable. You are going great things in a lot of good hearts. Your words are powerful and universal. In that way, God has made you like Himself. Keep close to Him.
About to do the 5 minutes on Friday exercise on “aches”
You write: “Apparently God was more gracious than those who purported to speak on His behalf. Because He gently, patiently showed me time and again that … He just loved me for me. Plain and simple.”
I needed to hear those words today. Sometimes we learn the most from the places we least expect it. Lest you think you write in vain, your writings are your ministry. Please keep them coming.
Tommee
Hi! Wanted to stop by and say that I enjoy reading your blog so much and I love love love InCourage ~ it is truly a blessing! I live in Chattanooga, TN and am friends with a dear sister you may know ~ Robin Dance from Pensieve? I was so encouraged and inspired by her and her blogging adventures that I decided to try my hand at it too – never looked back
Hope you have a great day! Love in Him ~ Megan
I take my online sister’s in Christ seriously and pray over their issues with the knowledge we are not of this world & are here just for a small amount of time…Pray’s of Praise for your willingness to encourage!
Randomly found your blog through a link a friend posted on FB. Love your honesty and way with words. I look forward to following along. : )
I really enjoyed what you wrote the other day about sharing our failings. I am no longer a mother of young ones (my remaining at home three are teenagers) but remember the guilt, the fear of condemnation that kept me from trying real hard to have friends at a time when I needed them most. I still to this day am trying to overcome my shyness, sense of inadequacy and develop relationships in my local body. Hearing some of your struggles is like a life line to me sometimes. And btw, our family still has a sock basket where clean socks may or may not get matched up by mom…:)
I’m unlurking. I tried your 5 minute Friday challenge last week and I’m back for more. You inspire me…and I so appreciated what I find here-what a rich blessing.
Peace and good to you….see you on the regular.
Today’s 5 minute Friday was the topic I needed. I have to be brave and you are such an encouragement to me. I enjoy your blog; read it daily on my phone and today it is Spring Break, so I actually have time to visit the website.
I am in McKinney, Texas. I have never been to Africa, but you make me want to visit.
Thank you for allowing the Lord to work through you to encourage the rest of us!!
God bless.
Hi! I’m Hannah, and I just started reading your blog. Mom of 4 boys, I blog at mamawhimsy.blogspot.com
I totally relate!!!
I’m also a world traveler myself, but I did that before children, and I can only imagine the adventure with children!! How wild and fun!!
I must have clicked on your blog through a link…Ann Voskamp, maybe? Love your story and pix of Africa. We sent our daughter to South Africa last summer and it truly changed her. I also love the way you young moms are so talented and encouraging in Christ! I am a grandma and considering joining the real life group.
Hiya
Came here from “A Holy Experience” – am a missionary Mum in Brazil for last 24 years – kids in UK now, except for holidays. Hard one, but oh the joy when they come back! My husband’s way of waking up our hard-to-wake 16yr old daughter is to take one of our cats (called “Wake-up-Cat”) onto her bed – she loves being stroked by a cat to wake up.
Our connection not good enough for looking at too many blogs – nor enough time, but always enjoy it when I read yours – thanks.
I’m glad I stumbled on your blog. I’m another continent hopper and fan of small-town Michigan (I grew up not too far from Owosso, actually!). My husband and I have two kids, one of whom was born here in Germany. I love writing, traveling, and going home. I look forward to reading more on your site!
I’ve been reading your journey for a while, and enjoy your honesty and encouragement.
I’m in Christchurch, New Zealand, a working Mum of 3 children.
Just wanted to stamp your blog. I have been able to “catch-up” on reading and your blog is one I really enjoy. Love it!!!
i’m a believer, a wife, a mom, a doctor, a hopeless optimist. they’re hard things. but i love them all
sending well wishes from south carolina! mjs
Hi Lisa-Jo –
finally un-lurking after many, many months of…lurking (although I know I commented once before!). I think I clicked my way onto your blog because of the title; I feel a bit like a gypsa-mama at times, too. Thank God that the things that keep us strong are not tied to a physical place! Thank you for taking the time to share your heart and insights with the rest of us. Blessings, peace, and hugs to your little ones — kim
Hi Gypsy Mama
Just browsing your site and loving it all, especially all the traveling you’ve done! I hope to one day travel the world myself.
God Bless
Growing Mama (Michelle)
Hi! I’m Emilie, I just stumbled upon your blog and have really enjoyed reading your thoughts. I have/do travel and move a lot myself, a UK citizen, currently unexpectedly living back in the UK for a while… learning to be content and give my itchy feet to Jesus time and time again, until He allows me to move on!
I like the idea of your 5 min Fridays, I might start linking up!
Hi Lisa-Jo,
I found you via a friend of mine today, and am really enjoying your blog. I was born in Beirut, Lebanon, but moved to the USA as a little child and have lived here since (except for a month my husband and I spent living in Germany one year ago). I too love getting stamps in my passport!
Thank the Lord for His faithfulness in each of our journeys!
In Christ,
Randa
Stumbled across your blog via someone else’s. Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your year of No’s – I really related to it and felt grateful to know that we are not the only ones in the world who wanted to stay in SA but couldn’t! And for the reminder that God’s ways are indeed good and grace. Blessings!
Hi, just came across your blog through listening to your podcast with Tsh. I’m from the UK , have 3 children 6 and under and the oldest is called Micah – cool name!!!
Hi there!
I found you after listening to the simple mom podcast–you were hilarious! It was the best episode yet!
So, I’m 45 and had returned to school to get my masters and PhD when my only child, Amanda, died in a car accident last summer. I returned home to raise my granddaughter–not at all where I wanted to be at this point in my life, but it has turned out to be the most amazing second chance at life one could ever get. She is four and beautiful and smart and damn near perfect in every way . . . . just a little biased!
I’ve taken the year off just to hang out and get our lives together. I’ll return to school next fall when she starts kindergarten.
Meanwhile, I’ll be lurking along on your travels!
Hello
I’m so glad I found you. I’ve just read your motherhood post at a time when I really needed to read it and I wish I’d found you when I was nursing my children all night and wondering where my life had gone.
You sound like a wise lady. I’m off to have a little look round the other posts now!
Thankyou.
God bless you.
Helenx
I love your blog although I am confused. I claim to be African as I grew up in Zambia and married a Zimbabwean. I have an American accent though because of my parents. When I listened to your vlog, you have an American accent Are you South African or just grew up there (like me!).
My daughter now is serious about a South African guy so it looks like it runs in the family.
Hi Lisa-Jo. My name is Christyna. It is so nice to meet you! As a newlywed who’s life is also chaos, I have really been enjoying your blog. It is nice to find a blog that doesn’t make me feel like I’m failing. Thank you so much for sharing your life experiences here.
Love your wisdom. I believe wholeheartedly that our stories can be like coming home. Women sharing life- honest life- with one another makes us all stronger.
I’m new here, but I absolutely L.O.V.E. your Five Minute Friday meme! Thanks for the good reads, and I look forward to new posts as well as browsing the archives. I also have lived all over – I was a military baby, born in England, lived all over the US, raised mostly in Colorado, college in the southeast, spent an internship in Spain, lived in Virginia after marrying my husband, and now we live in the Big City – NYC!
I just recently discovered your blog, and am still becoming familiar with it. I myself am fairly new to the blogging world and that is taking me quite some research to figure out as I’m sure you are well aware. I serve God through Christ as a delightfully happy wife, a grateful mother and homeschool mom and I’m working at becoming a joyful keeper of the home.
I discovered your page because of 5-Minute Friday which I’m now trying to do, and love the concept of. Can’t quite figure out how to add that badge to my post though, one of those I gotta figure that out things. Anyway, nice to “meet” you and look forward to following you.
Renee
South Florida here. It’s good to know Jesus is wherever we are.
Pastor’s wife and mum in the Northern Territory of Australia.
I’m currently in Spokane, Washington with my hubby and our amazing daughter. I was just introduced to your blog this morning and I cannot get enough of it! Your heart for the Lord is so encouraging and I am soaking up your wisdom!
Thanks for sharing!
I’m learning a lot, growing a lot, crying a bit, and being entertained and encouraged often! I’m from many places– how do you name a home? Where your heart is? Where your family is? I am from New York, Tanzania, Minnesota…and slowly, but surely, adding to my list of houses and homes. Thank you!
Hi, I’m Julia (pronounced Huleeah- my first language is Spanish- but everyone calls me Julie, even my non-English speaking family), i’m from the Dominican Republic, and live in Fargo ND- the story of how i gave up the Tropics for the Prairie is too long to include here, but i can resume it by saying that God really seemed to want us here (and i still have to find out why- but all in His time). I am also married to a Peter, and we have two daughters (Lara is 5 and Emma is less than a week old). I found this today, a cousin posted it on Facebook earlier- and i can’t stop reading. I really needed the encouragement today…
Thanks! I guess i’ve been de-lurked now
Julie
just found you thru a link to your mean girls post…. will come back many times (now that i know about you) and see what else you are writing about and experiencing…. so far i like what i see!
Me, too — Mean Girls post, which I loved. And then — On Why You Need to Keep on Writing… Spot on. I’ll definitely be back to check out more of your posts.
Hi Lisa-Jo, I’ve been visiting here a while, commented a few times, and have participated in the Five Minute Friday linky many times over the past year (which are so fun; thank you for hosting each week). Just want to officially say “hi”, and introduce myself! I live in Wisconsin, via Alabama, originally from India.
Also, the post a few days about how to handle mean girls was so beautifully written; I loved it. Thank you for those words.
Hi! Just stopping by because a friend of mine posted a link to your “What I want my daughter to know about mean girls” post, and it made me cry. So beautifully written.
I have a 10 month old daughter, and I shudder to think of her Junior High years. I’ve been there and come home crying to my Momma’s arms more times than I care to count. She always reminded me that my worth didn’t come from those mean girls, but from my Heavenly Father, and I’m so grateful. I made it through and have some of the most Godly women in my life to call friends. (Thank you Jesus!)
Anyway, I felt like I needed to thank you for the post that touched my heart. My little Molly might hit some rough patches in this life, but He will carry her through.
You have a new subscriber!
Hi Lisa-Jo. I found you through a Pin on Pinterest, “What I want my daughters to know about mean girls.” I am not a mother, but I work with children and most of my friends are mothers of daughters. I believe in your message which led me to follow a few more postings on beauty which I then proceeded to “like” on facebook. Now I’m following you all over the internet I guess. You have an interesting story and a lovely voice. My heart is happy to listen to you.
Just came across your site when a Facebook friend shared your post “What I want my daughter to know about the mean girls”. Love it! Thank you for using your God-given talent to share your experiences and insight with the world.
Jay
I pushed the button too fast. I have a Special Needs daughter who is 12 now. We adopted her when she was an infant, and we know first hand the extent to how mean her “friends” and people in general can be. Your way with words in that particular post brought me to tears as I pictured my own daughter in her experiences.
This is only my second time over…I visited recently when you were mentioned at aholyexperience.com. I have just recently been prompted by the Lord to take my blogging seriously. This week I have come across your 5 minute Fridays several times, so now I’m here! Hoping it might work out for me to join that fun! Love the passport theme here…one of my very favorites ever!
I’ve been reading for awhile but never read the unlurk page
. This is me, a messy momma with a heart for Jesus, family and women. If you came over I’d serve you coffee and we’d sit on the back deck barefoot watching my kids dig for worms in the dirt. I’d probably end up sharing a bit of my story of how God has moved in my life in the area of anxiety and trusting Him. We would laugh about the fact that I literally have a few screws loose in my head and you’d share what God has done and continues to do in your life. Sprinkled in our afternoon would be a bit of laundry folding, refereeing the kids and laughter. There, hopefully you don’t feel like the only one who shares
Hi I found your site through pinterest so I’m not a regular reader, but home to come back! I love your blog and the concept of a life journey. I have a running timeline of my life written out on paper. I’d love to organize it better…

I am a new reader!
Hey Lisa-Jo. I’m Michelle. I can’t remember how I found 5-Minute Fridays, but I did and try to play along when God gives me words.
My husband is an MK from South Africa, and someday our dream is to visit there together so I can experience his roots myself. He was in Cape Town primarily.
I’m new to blog world & Twitter as of late January, 2012. I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would. As long as God gives me words I will write.
I enjoyed seeing all the inRL Tweets. Didn’t get in on the action cuz I didn’t know before hand, but what a neat idea God gave you!
Blessings to you!
Michelle
Greetings from Düsseldorf Germany! Just found your site and excited to to share it with others. Espeically the 100 ways to encourage a new mom. As a mom of a 3 year old and another on the way, I enjoy your advice and experiences. Good luck on your future journies. – Andrea
Hi Lisa-Jo,
I can’t even remember the trail that led me to your blog, but I’m glad I found it! You’ve written some beautiful things here, especially on the topic of writing! I thank you for your inspiring words. I’m a U.S. Expat and new mom, living in Nicaragua, and trying my best to write about it all. I envy your journeys and wish you many more!
All the best,
~Sarah
Thanks for providing such a fab blog! I get your email updates and look forward to opening my mailbox because of them. I’m a new mom (or mum, I guess…living in the UK changes the terminology so much!) and especially like the ebook! I need me a cheerleader
. I’ve left a link to my new blog in case you get two seconds to have a look, or if anyone else who sees this wants to creep on my own trials and tribulations. Well done and thanks again!
Just found your blog and got lost reading a bunch of articles. So I thought I would say “hi” here.
I needed a cheerleader the last few days. Your book has made me feel not so alone through some of the darker days of Motherhood. It made me cry with relief to know I am not alone.
Thank you.
Love your site! Want to read your book but my computer is having issues downloading for some reason tonight. Hope to get to it soon!
)
linked over here from a post on Better Writer about your 5 minute Fridays- I’m a day late as usual- to find this but you can be sure that I’ll be prepared for next Friday. Not blogging very long myself- the rest of life and all; but now I love the whole process and I Love reading about young moms and the struggle for self, family and faith. Keep writing!
I am so looking forward to reading some more of your musings and insights… I’m thinking there’s going to be some encouragement or wisdom here for me to discover. I somehow stumbled onto your site TWICE tonight from two completely unrelated sources… One real-life friend (Peaches and Beaches) posted a link on her blog from your beautiful tribute to your mom and your compassionate care for other daughters who’ve lost their moms, and just 10 minutes before that I was reading your incredible 100 Mothers Day Gifts list (from a link on a total strangers pinterest page… I just love her style, food, family and faith links so keep peeking at whatever she pins! I tell my girlfriends she’s my virtual best friend!). When I realized I’d been on your site twice, I figured I was meant to subscribe!
I’m excited to have you as a cheerleader!
I think we run unknowingly in some of the same cyber circles. I’m pretty sure I have several friends who follow your blog. I would tell you all about myself, but that’s already on my blog. I am happy to have found your site, and I wish you and your family happy and safe travels.
I stumbled upon your site today and am looking forward to Fridays!
